... and so much to choose from.

As I have learned here on TT, one protein does not fit all. I haven't had any problems with the ones I've tried, Unjury being the first brand recommended by my NUT, but I'm still looking for cheaper. Rx not required - just trial and unfortunately for many, error - and an expensive error if you can't trade it off to someone.

Default Like it or not, it's just part of the deal

Having been someone who has used protein shakes post op for many years now, I know they're not the best thing in the world. But I have to say that when it comes to "liking it" it's really not an option.

I've found that after going through all the changes with diet and nutrition that I've experienced the last few years, that there are things we learn we just have to do in order to succeed at being at a healthy weight. Protein shakes are one of them. Like it or not, it's just the way it is.

Look at it this way...if one of the realities of WLS is protein shakes, and you HAVE to do it, then you're better prepared for the self-discipline required in OTHER areas of food. For example, not being able to eat things you love (that got us fat), not being able to eat "just one bite more" and a whole host of other REALITIES that WLS requires in order to succeed in losing the weight we've put on.

The protein shakes are a warmup for the serious food changes. Like 'em or not, you've got to take your medicine in life if you want to be healthy. Those baby steps post-op, like shakes, are the first steps toward getting our food under control and taking charge of our bodies.

Trust me, there are harder challenges than protein shakes further down the road. You gotta do what you gotta do if you want to succeed. Period.

I hate my multivitamin, I hate my calcium chewables and I hate protein shakes. I know that this is a recipe for disaster, so I'm taking notes from this thread.
~Mahealani~
Mahealani, I've read this and other posts and I'm concerned that perhaps you didn't realize ahead of time just what the DRASTIC measures were that YOU would be responsible for after the surgeon did his magic. This is not meant to pick on you, but I am concerned that when I read posts like yours (from you and others) that your success will be undermined because you aren't submitting to the requirements of your new body.

Like it or not, your pouch now dictates food. I didn't like it, not at first, no way. But I followed it's commands. And it worked. It required self-discipline and even more important: SELF DENIAL. No more giving in to my old ways, the sick ways that got me so fat. I had to submit to a power outside my will, and bend my will accordingly. It is how I succeeded.

I realize that this is a HUGE transition. But I would like to encourage you to look at it as something that you chose to have done to you that you now must learn to respect. Otherwise you are going to be miserable. You'll ask "what have I done to myself?" and a whole host of other questions that will seriously mind-f*ck with your success. That's ONE option. The other option is the one I and others who are long-term successful WLS individuals have done: be grateful for the external control that was put into us by the surgeon, and DO THE INTERNAL CONTROL that only we ourselves can do.

It IS possible, but it is NOT simple. It is hard work. Which is why it is SO worth it in the long run. In ALL areas of life, something that's hard work is always more rewarding than taking the easy way out, right?

I hope these words resonate somewhere inside you and others perhaps, and are received in the spirit they are given: from someone who has been where you are and has slain some of the demons you are wrestling. I encourage you to submit to your pouch consciously. It is the only way to succeed after having surgery. Submit and respect your pouch day by day and you will get the results that you long for. It can happen, but it's totally in your control.

Or you could be the nurse I know, 2 years postop and carrying a hamburger around in her scrubs at work so she can constantly eat. She has regained the majority of her weight. And she hates herself for that. It breaks my heart and I wish she had found a way to love her new pouch. But she did not.
