Smile Why hasnt my doc told me!

Hi everyone!
I am almost 3 weeks post op and have lost about 20 lbs- which I am thrilled about BUT I have a question- My doc hasnt told me not to eat anything specifically. The nutritionist has said soft foods- but I can eat pretty much anything I can tolerate.
I cant eat very much and focus on protein content of everyhting- but I didnt have to do a liquid diet other than the first 2 days in the hospital. Has anyone else had this?
I am feeling excellent!! I am however hungry . I was hoping that I would be one of those who didnt feel any hunger but I can for sure tell when it is time to eat!!
Thanks for your imput,
caran

Caran,

Glad you're feeling great and have lost 20 lbs already..way to go!!

Every doctor has a different "protocol" for introducing new foods. Mine required soft foods for about 6 weeks post-op to allow the pouch to heal with little or no swellng. But others have been allowed a regular diet pretty much post-op. I also did NOT have any pre-op diet to follow, except for the day before surgery.

And I understand the hunger issues...right now it could be head-hunger that you're experiencing...but it's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Good luck on your continued great success!!

Cathy

Caran:

I too was not given a specific diet to follow and was told to introduce foods as tolerated. Even though you're hungry, please, please, please take the time to let your pouch heal. There are so many people out here who can give you advice on what to eat and for how long. All I can remember about that point is with no specific direction, I threw up a lot for the first 6 months. Not a happy begining. One thing to remember as your start to introduce solids is chew, chew chew. That was my problem, I've always eatten very fast and therefore didn't chew my foods enough which caused clogging and vomitting. Remember the opening going in is about the size of an M&M. Not very big. When I started with solids, I found that if I used a blender and chopped chicken breast pieces, not pureed, but fine chopped, I had a much better time eatting it. I hope you can get a more specific diet to follow instead of the trial and error method. Wishing you the best.

Sharon

Default I am always amazed

At how different each Dr is in there plan. I have heard some folks do all pureed items and others just have to do trial by error. My Dr is in the middle. He has certain foods you try at certain stages. The first was eggs, cottage cheese, and refried beans. If after a week that goes well then you can do chicken, turkey, fish, string cheese, and some bland soups. Then you can add a few more (can't remember as not there yet) And then set free.

Right now I am struggling like you with eating too fast AND sometimes too much. I made the mistake of doing the "one more bite" won't hurt thing last night and I kept it down but it was not comfortable and would have almost rather it come up but I had re-surgery and I have to be extra cautios not to upset my pouch. Proof some habits are hard to break. I feel discouraged when this happens and worry I won't be able to change my habits but I tell myself have Faith. You will get there.

Congrats on the lose and good luck

Angela

Personally i'd stick with the very soft foods until 6 weeks. Your insides are healing and you really dont want to make them work harder than neccessary

Default re-do

I first had laprascopic rny then my bowel kinked and caused a leak so I then had a re-do of the surgery as a full open. I think I am an exception to the rule and it is major surgery. I also think that if my bowel had not kinked I would have been ok.

I am happy to answer your questions though I am only 6 weeks out
