besides the obvious, like gum

I could NOT live without chewing gum. Its what keeps me from mindlessly snacking all day.
My doc never told me to stay away from stuff except Soda and my old favorites cakes, cookies, duh the stuff that made me fat

I was told most of the same foods too but I've had white bread w/no problems, popcorn too! Gum I chew but throw away instead of swallowing it. I recently have had fountain soda which I can tolerate but can't drink it out of a bottle? I think mostly they don't want you to eat anything that is BAD for you but it is all a part of what works for some and not others!

I was also told no citrus. I understand it can irritate the new pouch. But does this mean I can't have it EVER?
I was told no grapes for a year. Why? I have no clue.
Anyone else heard of this?!

Re the gum: I don't know if she told me this to scare me or not.. but I'm a notorious gum swallower, and I'm not willing to take a chance. She was very specific about it being a cause for landing in the OR should I do that.. I'm just not willing to test that little tidbit of information to see if it's true or not.
Re the citrus: I was told not to eat any of the white part of the membranes from the citrus, but the fruit itself was okay.. I just needed to cut that off meticulously.
Re the grapes: I dunno, grapes were given as an 'okay' if I tolerated it.. I've had some, I just make sure I chew well, and if I have any problem with any portion of the skin, I spit that part out.
I don't make either of them a habit in my diet, due to the sugars and my being diabetic but I've had them on occasion. Last time I had a bit of orange, my pouch didn't like it much and started to ache.. that was after just two small sections.
I've also swiped a small bit of popcorn from Geof on occasion as well with absolutely no ill effects other than my wanting more, LOL.

Thanks for the info!
I was told that swollowing gum would lead to the ER, becuase if it gets stuck you will not be able to drink water. But that it would be easy to remedy ... just a pain in the ass. The whole surgical take on it is new to me though.
So that means I can have cirtus juice??? Man, I'm gonna call my doc and ask her what's up. I sure do miss civeche.
The no grapes thing sounds very strange to me, I just can't put my finger on that one.
Anyone else???

You should be able to drink citrus juice just watch the sugars you might want to dilute it half & half with water!

I don't recall the no-nos...my doc had it modified several times as years of data started to show up that having a strict diet didn't work. We have the surgery to live life again, not to keep obsessing over food. It's more of a tolerance and moderation issue. Too much or too little of anything isn't healthy for you.

I was told in the first year not to eat raw carrots - too hard to digest. Popcorn, corn, bread and pastas. I was told that bread swells in the pouch. I've heard that pasta and rice have a tendency to clump together makeing you feel very uncomortable. I also didn't eat salad for a very long time. I still have problems digesting tomatoe bits, even if very small. I have issues with apples and citrus. I can eat them but they cause abdominal cramps and a quick scoot to the bathroom in the morning. No problems with bananas though. On the coconut issue, hummm, maybe because it's hard to digest and have a lot of calories?
I was also told that you will tolerate some things very well today and then the next week it will make you sick. Although he couldn't explaine why. I think as we are all individuals, everyone's experience is different.
I was never told there was anything that I would never be able to eat again. I do seem to recall something about not swallowing gum and shouldn't drink carbonated beverages though.
Best of luck on your journey.
Sharon
