Default General diet question

I'm less than a week out for surgery so I've been reading through the forum like a crazy person trying to get all the information possible before I start my new lifestyle. My first food question is this...

During every meeting with the dietician and in all the dietary info I was given the one big rule (other than NO caffeine or carbonation) is to avoid foods that combine liquids and solids. I love soup but the nutritionist said I need to only plan on having soup if I spread it over two meals - one broth only and one solids only. With this said, I'm seeing a lot of posts from people who seem to eat soup regularly after surgery (and drink coffee) and I'm wondering why there are so many differences between diets. I realize everyone is different but it seems like the basics should be close even with different surgeons. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure about your NUT but my plan was just no drinking during eating, and for at least 30 minutes till after Im done. I follow that to a T. But I do eat cereal also. And soup. I guess it all depends on the individual.

There are, indeed, different views on this subject. However, I recommend that you listen to the advice given to you by the people who are your professionals. You will get really confused if you try to follow everyone's lead. After a while you will get your own sense of it, and you will make decisions about your food based on a lot of factors. For now, listen to your pros. That's my suggestion!

Best of luck to you!

I have to agree with Claire...she's so smart! ....my nutritionist said no caffeine, no soup unless it was really thick soup and if you were doing cereal make sure the amount of milk is less than the amount of cereal.

Now that being said, over time I found out what worked well for me. But I made sure I followed the "rules" until I was much closer to goal. Now I will do soup but usually it is still thick soup. Occasionally I will have soup that is more broth but I try to stay away from that most of the time.

In regards to caffeine...yes, I will have it on occasions but it isn't daily and I didn't start drinking it until I was more than a year postop. The problem with caffeine is that it could cause an ulcer in your pouch so you need to be aware of that possibility.

I'm 8 weeks post op and am still eating 'mushy' foods.
If I eat 'solid' food like shrimp or tuna, my pouch hurts really bad for at least 2 hours.
I do eat a lot of soups. I try to stick with the thicker ones like pea soup so I'll feel fuller longer. When I have thinner broth soups I eat a lot slower and less so I don't take in a huge amount of sodium.
But for me, my food needs to be mushy and very 'wet' ... I just can't handle anything 'solid' or dry.
Trust me, your new pouch will let you know what's up!
