It's basically Kraft cheese slices cut into strips.

This form of "string cheese" is roughly cylindrical, about 6 inches (15 cm) long and less than 1 inch (2 cm) in diameter. The cheese is cut and packaged, either individually or as a package of several lengths. The cheese used is nearly always a form of mozzarella but may be another semi-soft cheese. This type of string cheese can eaten by pulling strips of cheese from the cylinder along its length and eating these strings or by biting and chewing, as in a banana."

This is soooo funny. Here I am a born and Breed Wis. girl and having to hear STRING Cheese explained is cracking me up!!

Kraft Cheese slices cut into strips??? LOLOLOL!!!! That's a good one!!!!!! See this is where the whole, language barrier really gets you into trouble!

String cheese is so called because like Dave said, it can be "pulled" apart and the results look like STRINGS! It's a staple around here, for me especially.

I so love string cheese. Can anyone eat an entire piece without getting full? I eat about half and start feeling full.

I, too love string cheese. I can go about 3/4 before I have to stop. I found some at Kroger here that is cheddar with chipotle peppers in it. It is yummy. Nice change from the basic mozzarella.

I bought some that had jalapenos in it. It was really good and since the surgery I want everything to be spicy.
