My doctor also recommended Viactiv. I guess each surgeon is different and allow different things. I did try chewable calcium and it made me sick. It was too chalky. I enjoy the chocolate chews! It is a treat...

I'm glad I ran across this thread. My doctor (well, actually the girl who does the exercise counseling), recommended the Viactiv chews as well. I haven't had surgery yet, so I suppose it doesn't really matter yet. But, I have an appointment with the NUT next month, and I'm going to quiz her about it.

Osteoporosis (bone loss) runs in my family, so this could definitely be crucial to me. Are there any drawbacks to taking BOTH types of calcium at the same time just to cover your bases?

I'm not sure if there are any draw backs, Sherry but the one thing I know for sure is that you can only absorb 600 mg at one time so if you were to take both you would be taking Calcium 4 times a day. You need to be taking 1000-1200 mg a day. Other concern that I know of is that some people have reported getting kidney stones with high doses of calcium. I would say you should discuss this with your doctor or nutritionist.

Kidney stones! Yikes! I'll definitely ask then, and just take the one right type.
