Question Liquid Diet???

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum, but I have been reading some of the post on this site and they have answered alot of my questions except one. I'm having a really hard time understanding what I'm going to be able to eat after surgery as far as the full liquid diet. And also what vitamins I should get and protein.

Honestly my appointment with my nutritionist was so overwhelming and quick that I was'nt able to remember alot of the info she gave me.

Can any of you tell me what you had while on the full liquid diet also include what vitamins and protein powders you had. This will help me alot so I can start buying all my food for my 2 recovering weeks. at this point I'm so clueless, that I'm thinking of just eating the exact same thing for two weeks. (The sample menu the nutritionist gave me). EVERYONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Good for you for coming to this Forum for help. This is a great place. I would suggest a good start would be to look around here a bit more, maybe do a search, because lots of people have the same questions as you and I know there have been some great answers given. For my liquid diet I drank lots of protein drinks (I don't have the same problems stomaching them as some do, though they did get old after awhile), sipped broth, had some jello and pudding. My doctor's liquid diet was a little more broad than some since he allowed the jello and pudding. I think EVERYONE gets sick of the diet after the first week or so, but it is soooo important to follow it and allow the pouch to heal. The protein drink I relied on was Nectar protein, which can be made with water and I loved since I couldn't have much milk my first month post-op. I also like Unjury brand and Wellements ProBlend 55. One of my favorite ways to drink protein is to use International Cafe sugar-free instant coffee drinks, heat up a little milk or water to 130 degrees, and mix in a scoop of chocolate Unjury. Great way to get 20-30g protein. Good luck!

P.S.: I see you're from the Bay Area, too! Hey there, neighbor!

I had a lap-band removed and an RNY on 02/25/2008. So this is my second round of full liquids. I am allowed to eat anything clear along with protein shakes. Jello, diluted juices (but not all juices). I have made sugar free/fat free jello pudding with my protein shakes.

Everything you put in your mouth with the exception of broths is sweet tasting. This is where I get crazy. I am sick to death of the sweet stuff. If anyone has any ideas I am looking for some.

Thank you
Virginia

Talking My Liquid Diet

Hi Cindie,

Welcome! I am a new member to this forum too and love it, so far. Very helpful. I am three and a half weeks post-op (LAP RNY) and I was on liquids until one week after surgery (clear liquids in the hospital - mostly broth, water and popsicles - which I loved). After coming home from the hospital, I was able to move on to full liquids which included low carb slim fast or glucose control boost (great source of protein) cream soups, sugar free jello, pudding, popsicles, low-carb yogurt, and the like. The second week, I moved on to soft foods like cottage cheese, low-fat cheese, saltines (chewed until mushy), pureed vegetable soup, mashed potatos, scrambled eggs, bananas, oatmeal, and even had some pureed chicken and a few shrimp that week and did fine with them. Finally, the third week, I started cooking for my family again and started adding regular foods back into my diet - so far so good. Still trying to find a protein source that I can drink without shivering from the grossness. I have ordered some of the Syntax Nectar - hopefully that will be better for me. My only big problem so far has been remembering to chew and take small bites. I have a busy schedule so sometimes I make the mistake of trying to do two things at once and will forget my chewing - my pouch pipes up pretty quick to let me know to slow down. It's not a nice feeling, believe me. Anyway, best of luck to you and hopefully this will give you some ideas. There are a couple of links in some of the threads that will take you to some nutritional outlines that are pretty good. Do a search and you might be able to find some of those as well. Again, best wishes and welcome to the club!!

My first post op week I was on chicken broth (with Unjury unflavored protein powder), sugar free popsicles, sf jello, crystal light, and water. My second week I got to add on chocolate carb advantage eas protein shakes. I think my doc has a more regimented diet than some others I have read on here. Hope this helps.

Yes, I have to stay on that diet for the rest of the week. I might be able to scoot up the stage by a day or two but I'm sure not by 5 days. What I would give for some strained baby food. The last time I went though this split peas were my favorite. I just can't handle the sweet stuff anymore.

Thanks for everyones imput.
