Default Cucumber but not pickle?

I have been wondering why a cucumber is considered a vegitable, but a pickle is not. Anybody know why? My Dietician considers raisins and grapes both as fruits, so what is different about a pickle and cucumber?

I just looked this up on-line, and I understand them BOTH to be fruits! Who would have thought. Perhaps since cukes grow on vines, they are fruits.

Anything that is the result of a flowering plant is a fruit, including cucumbers, tomatoes, and even peppers. True vegetables are the plants themselves, not the result of a flower: lettuce, carrots, radishes, etc.

As far as pickles not being a fruit...I've never heard it characterized as one or the other. Perhaps it's a pickled fruit, or a vinegared veggie, or maybe it's just a pickle and doesn't need further classification. These are the kinds of the things that I ponder all the time, so thanks...here's one more thing to think about.

Default perhaps the salt content

Perhaps your dietitian doesn't want to list pickles as an acceptable vegetable because of the huge salt content?

Whereas cucumbers are always listed as a "free" vegetable.

As far as fruit vs vegetable >>> who knew it could be so complicated!

PLUS!!!! my goodness you are all sooooo funny!!!! LOL
