Wal Mart's Great Value brand has a sugar free maple and brown sugar oatmeal that is really good.

I like the brown sugar splenda...I just wish they could figure out a way to make it calorie free, like the regular splenda. I was kinda suprised when I read the nutritional info on it, and saw that it had calories.

You want to be careful with oatmeal. One thing we do not need is a bunch of fiber. Fiber is filling and slow to digest, which is good when you are trying to lose weight, but for WLS patients, extra fiber is not necessary and can be counter-productive. My surgeon explained that for the human body to be healthy, there are only three thing needed: water-based liquids, protein and vitamins. These three things are imperative for WLS patients even more so. Oatmeal should be considered a treat, not part of your regular diet.

Something else to consider: putting fruit in oatmeal is yummy, but fruit is sugar, plain and simple.

I would love to be able to eat plain, unsweetened oatmeal once in a while, but I dump on it every time. I wonder why I can eat fruit and not dump, but not oatmeal?

When you eat oatmeal, do you experience early or late dumping?

Early dumping occurs within minutes of eating, and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, diarrhea, dizziness and fatigue.

Late dumping occurs 30 minutes or more after eating, and symptoms include weakness, sweating, and dizziness.

If it's more late dumping, your system has a hard time digesting carbs, particularly complex carbs like oatmeal. Early dumping is most commonly associated with difficulty in digesting fats.

And as for being able to eat fruit, I am the same way. Fruit doesn't bother me. My nutritionist suggested that some people are more sensitive to refined sugar vs. natural sugar. Why? Who the heck knows.

One thing you might try is making your oatmeal with milk instead of water. If you can get Bordon's High Protein milk, all the better. I have heard that this can help the symptoms if you just gotta have the oats.

Thanks Cinnbunn, I will try that the next time i try oatmeal. I definately have late dumping, so it must be the carbs. I also cannot eat plain potatoes, cream of wheat, grits, sweet potatoes, etc etc. Carbs, I guess I just didn't put 2 and 2 together.
But carbs from fruit...
I eat fruits lower on the carb chart, like straawberries, grapefruit, blueberries, almost every day. Granted the servings are small, but I just love the stuff, and it's better than what I used to eat.

Carbs from vegetables don't seem to bother me, except for the starchy vegetables.
