how to handle breads, etc.
Before I ask my questions I have to say thank you again to everyone who shares their knowledge here! Not having any guidance from my surgeon has really led me to rely on you all here, thanks...
Ok I start "full foods" in a couple days and am just wondering about a few things. When did you start to incorporate breads, and which ones are the easiest to handle? Also, which meats are the easiest to start with, and which should I avoid? How do salads fair with your pouch and what types of dressing should I avoid? Will I tolerate crispy things like chips if chewed well? I know fried things and sugars are a no-no forever right? I hear a lot of people can't ever really do chicken again, what about you? I'm thinking about certain places I may be forced to eat at, what do you order here: Smoothie King, Quiznos, Subway, etc. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
WOW didn't realize I was so lost! I may try to schedule an appt. with a nutritionist who deals specifically with GBS patients if possible, BUT y'alls advice is greatly appreciated!

Breads are like a giant NO GO right now. Trust me when I say, you won't be able to get them down.
Ive been doing chicken & stars soup.. i did salmon... wendys baked potatoes... homemade taco meat (made w/ ground turkey) & whole wheat chips.. to be honest you are going to have to see what works for you personally. TRIAL AND ERROR!! You will see that some things work, some don't.. some work one day, while others dont that next day.
Some people can handle sugar, some can't .. i have food with sugar in it.. but i try to find the low-fat.. or low-sugar kind.. A lot of people cant handle ice cream, even the no sugar added/ sugar free kind. Find foods that are NOT DRY. you want moist foods.. i also recommend to avoid overeating, getting a toddler fork/spoon... i love it. i mix a lil piece of turkey w/ mashed taters... and chewed my best.. OH PLEASE CHEW CHEW CHEW.. you will in so much pain if you dont.. trust me.

No breads right now, in fact try to stay away from pasta, bread, rice right now. The longer you can go without them the better. I could not do ANY fast food for a very long time...over a year. Salads were out for a long time too, and I still don't do them well.
Keep to good quality protein - cheese, eggs, soft meats and have a little soft veggies and maybe fruit. Thats about it for the first 3 months. Chilli was a good one for me at 8 weeks. I kept it really slow for up to 8 weeks, and didn't put a whole lot of food in my mouth. Subway I used to do a turkey wrap, until they changed the low carb ones for the crappy ones they have now. I do a mini sub now, but I am almost 2 years out.
You variety will be very limited now, but increasing over time. Learn to eat good things, gain good habits and you will benefit in the long run.

I would not go there now~
I am almost 3 years out and some days I can eat a cressant roll and then can not tolerate them for months.I did not even try bread/rolls/ sandwich untill almost my two year mark.Many others work breads in slowly and watch their intake.
All in time,

I'm only about 9 months out, but I incorporate different breads into my diet.. just everything in moderation.
I think alot is going to depend on your pouch, as everyone's seems to have it's own idea of what it wants to eat... Personally, I can't tolerate any type of wheat bread or pasta..it does not agree with my pouch AT ALL. Wheat thins are okay, as long as I only eat a few of them.. Salad? I didn't even try until at least 7 months out, but even now I only eat a few bites and leave the rest. It's important to get your proteins in first, and if you still can't eat enough proteins, then it's a no go on everything else.
Chicken and poultry is also a personalized thing.. For me? Chicken is pretty much the easiest meat I can eat. Steak is okay, too, as long as it's Medium Rare.. The meats I've had problems with are tougher, such as Lamb, Veal, and those types of things. Chicken, steak, fish, beef, and turkey are all agreeable with me..but aren't for some.
Everything is a trial error type of thing... and you'll have to find out on your own by experimenting. Just remember MODERATION.. and I agree that holding out on the carbs for as long as possible would probably be a good thing. Obviously anytime you can opt for something low-fat, low-sugar, those are going to be your best bets.. only time will tell what your pouch likes and doesn't.

I didn't eat breads, rice or pasta for over two years. The nutrients weren't there and it filled me up and took space nutrient rich food needed. It also is mushy and causes problems. It was hard to give up, but I'm able to have a little now. But never with a meal. One of those things I was glad to give up in order to lose weight.

I eat a half slice of bread when i'm having a bread meal, like for breakfast and stuff, but for me, i can only eat bread that have a high content of fiber, like whole wheat, and darker bread types. White bread is a biiig nono, as it feels like it takes up all the space, and i get stomach aches. I can have a small piece of potato or one french frie ( lol). If i have more than that i dump. I dump on fatty food and sugar.
As far as pasta goes, i can eat the whole grain pasta, about 2 tablespoons, but i can't eat spaghetti, it's harder to chew proparly than bigger pieces of pasta. Same with rice, i can have about 2 tablespoon of unpolished rice, and whole grain rice (I don't know the english word for it. but it's a bit bigger and darker than "normal" rice)
Subs, i order them without butter and mayo, and i take the top of and eat the bottom with the stuff on top. Also if they have the option to choose a darker bread, i do.
McD's or burger King i order the kiddy burger, take the top bun of, and eat half.
You just have to try and feel your way through the food jungle as to what you can eat or not. Good luck!

I kind of do carbs the South Beach way- if I do them at all, they are as close to all -natural and whole grain as possible: breads and rice are brown, potatoes are sweet.
I do okay with bread, but toast is better. Bread seems to get stuck. If I do bread, I ALWAYS do a high-fiber bread, that seems to help and it is better for me. I can do crackers, but I only do a couple. (Otherwise it just seems waaaaay too wierd to sit and eat a hunk of cheese all by itself!) Again, whole grain, high fiber crackers or Wasa Crispbread. I do very little pasta, potatoes, rice, though I do tolerate them. Frankly, by the time I've had my protein and a few veggies, I'm full! I tried a biscuit a couple weeks ago and it almost killed me, I swear!
========
I can eat most meat, poultry, etc, but the beef has to be a very good quality ground beef or a really good cut, like filet mignon. I can't seem to do leftover chicken- it gets stuck unless stewed.
===========
I do a lot of chicken fingers when eating out, or a burger w/o the bread if I am in a decent restaurant. (Try a chiliburger w/o the bun- yum!) I love McDonalds, but can't really get much of it down. I don't dump, but it gets stuck when I've tried (Thank God, who needs it!) Yes, I know the fingers tend to be fried, but I pick off the coating and slide them down with something.

I am 11 months out and breads just do not work, I stay away from pasta and rice as well. I am doing fine without them. Take it slow keep to the protein and water fill in with veggies and if you want to add something slowly try fruit but chew very well and watch you quantity because of the sugar...
Enjoy the ride relish in what you can eat and forget about the rest.

~sigh~ Seriously. What I wouldn't do to be able to tolerate wheat products..if only for the fact that I know they're so much more healthy for me than white!! Who knows why my pouch doesn't want to agree.
But on a side note? I'd like to state that there is absolutely NOTHING weird about sitting down and just eating cheese! ROFL I probably consume about a lb of cheese a week...mostly by itself... Yes, I know, this is alot of cheese...hahaha But at least I get in my protein!
