Default Calcium Citrate vs Carbonate?

I feel like I am becoming a pain in the back side. It seems that for every question I get answered, more pop up.
I went on the web & discovered that there are two main types of calcium people use to supplement their diets...Carbonate and Citrate.
If I understand correctly...citrate is very acid. Could that be a problem for WLS folks?
The Caltrate Chewables that LizardQueen mentioned, are carbonate/alkaline based. That sounds like it would be easier on a sensitive pouch. They sound tasty too.
If you have experience with calcium please share it.
Thanks so much for your help, you great bunch of "losers."

You definitely need to take calcium citrate. Yes, I believe it is more acidic, but you need acid to break the calcium down. Since most of us don't have acid in our pouches, the carbonate doesn't do us any good. In fact, if you are prone to kidney stones, the carbonate will help them form! You take the calcium with a meal and it helps with the absorption and shouldn't cause any problems.

Thumbs up Citrate it is...

Rain mentioned that calcium carbonate could be a problem. I am so glad that you responded to my question Tracie. Thanks so much.

Here is an "Irish Toast" to a life of healthy bones for all WLS people.

Wink The Calcium Quest

Hi LQ
You are so sweet. Please know that being sorry for responding to a question is never necessary. We are all on this journey together. We share what we have learned. What works for one tummy might not work for another. Your feedback is important and appreciated. We are all in this together. Stay active. We need you, just like you need us.

I think that Tracie is correct. Calcium Citrate is the best choice. You might want to ask for your doctor's take on this issue. Knowledge is power.

((((Hugs))))

The above website has good info about calicum. Basiclly, calcium citrate is only marginally better with asorbation than calcium carbonate. It's up to you if it justifies the cost.

Yes! Take B12 now...just 1/week sublingual is sufficient most of us. I take it twice a week...some have to do it daily. The beauty of it is that you can't really OD on it, the excess gets peed out. Also, just as an aside, I have been reading a bit on B12 and the consensus of some studies is that the US guidelines are a bit low anyway.
