The guidelines I have are for 3 meals and 2 snacks.
The snack might be nothing more than a sugar free jello but normally it's something like an ounce of cheese, 1/2oz whole almonds or half a banana.
3 meals a day would mean 6 hours between eating - I couldn't handle that pre-surgery!

Katie - Bless you for loving your husband so much. You are so fortunate to have each other. And yes, I'm looking forward to hearing about your surgery date!
Jeri - how terrific that you are feeling so well. You may have some bad days - expect them - out of nowhere, but it's all about your new stomach adjusting.
Corrine - Yes, that was my schedule as well. However, at this point I think 5 small meals will work better for me. I will give it a try.
Hugs to all!

Thanks, Claire. Yes I've already had a couple of "pissy pouch" days. Days where I barely got the clear liquids in because everything that touched my pouch made it hurt. But they have been here & there. Overall things are incredible.

I still can only eat about 3tbsp's at a time ... so that is a small meal...
My doc and nurse suggest 5-6 meals a day because they said it will help raise your metabolism. I started shedding the pounds when I did 5-6 meals a day.
I start around 9am and don't eat past 7pm. I eat something small about every three hours. Even though I eat very little at a sitting the nurse said to count it as a meal. I started this about a month ago and I have noticed an increase in how much weight I lose each week.
Just be smart and I don't see why it would hurt any of you.

I could not do that many meals a day or I would graze all day long...some old bad habits. I have to be strict with myself and only did 3 meals a day for over the first year. Then I added in 2 snacks a day and stay at that.
I know the dietician and doctor suggest 5-6 small meals a day for the normal person, but I know as a GBP patient, that would mean more calories and food for the day, and more me personally, it wouldn't work....now saying this, those with pissy pouches and such may need 5-6 meals a day to get in proper nutrition.

5 - 6 small meals a day works best for me too - some will call them snacks, i wont let myself call food that word
breakfast:
(1) 5g fibre per slice toast with peanut butter
or egg whites, with cheddar cheese, mushrooms and tomatoes
or oatmeal
then sip on a non-fat, decafe, s/f vanilla latte
mid morning:
fruit
then sip water or green tea
lunch:
protein and veggies
or high fibre wrap
or protein and salad
then sip water or herbal tea
late afternoon:
veggies and sometimes with fat free dip
or a cup of soup
supper:
protein and veggies
i cannot do much for carbs - dump on them still for some odd reason
then sip on water and tea
evening:
or beef jerkey
or turkey pepperoni
or a slice of high fibre bread with slice of cheese
I keep my metabolism going by constantly fueling it, i need the calories to maintain my workouts and daily activities. I eat 1500 calories per day and at that i can keep my current weight. Without that amount my weight falls, more than that, my weight goes up. I have found this as a balance and it is what works for me.
Good luck on what finding what works for you, give it some time, it took me a week to see that my weight was stabilizing, (my weight can change 5 pounds over a couple of days) but now after following it for a few months, i know its best for me.

Claire thank you for the insite on the meal thing. I too have a difficult time with breakfast but I am getting better at it. For some reason in the morning I am nuaseated unsure of why. I'm sure in a few more months it will pass. I to do small meals. If I go out to eat I only eat two to three bites and then maybe a few more when I get home. I have a hard time following the no water rule after your meal I do leave room to take a little sip. I know I shouldn't but I can't help it.

I just love hearing how everyone eats, and how everyone has come to different conclusions based on their own body's needs. One size does not fit all, for sure.
I like Carrie's timing, but if I ate that much I would be gaining big time. I MUST eat less than 900 calories a day, so I fill them with the best nutrition I can. And the weight is dropping off, and I feel really well. I am now exercsing (aquajogging) 5 times a week - I upped it from 3 times a week. Love the feeling of the warm therapy water, and I give myself a really good workout.

My nut preaches 3 meals and 3 snacks. I'm with Carrie, I can't call them snacks. To me, a snack is potato chips or candy. I try to do major protein in my three main meals, then at least some small amount (usually some kind of cheese) for one or two of the "snacks". I don't know how I could get 60 g+ protein in only three meals eating as little as I can eat at a time!
Yesterday's food intake (with protein):
Breakfast: Atkins Advantage shake, small banana (15 g)
Snack: Kashi cereal w/ 2% milk (8 g)
Lunch: Ham and Cheese on a small piece of toasted Rye bread (26 g)
Snack: 100 cal pack of baked Cheetos and a few pieces of cheese (10 g)
Dinner: beef pinwheel and baked beans ( at least 20 g, probably more)
Snack: pumpkin surprise w/ graham crackers (maybe 4 g?)

Sorry for the double post, but now that I look at it I did have over 60 g from my three "main" meals. Interesting. I would be miserable only eating three times a day, though. I would feel deprived and I'm trying not to do that to myself.
