After your protein, sure...
If you have your protein at the levels where it is supposed to be, mashed potatoes won't hurt... bu tin moderation, like everything. I find that I get a head rush from potatoes, my body treats them much like they're sugar, so I eat them very little.

I liked a spoonful or two when I was at your point post-op, however, now they would just be another trigger, so I avoid them.

I am not sure how far out you are, but early on I was able to start melons and salads which are an excellent compliment to the protein.
They add fiber and offer an unlimited choice of flavors and texture.
Enjoy, do not be afraid....but...carbs are evil!

Ditto
What everyone else said. If it is a food you can eat 1/4 cup of, no problem, as long as you have had your protein in there. But some of us can't handle a little of certain things.
Carbs are not in and of themselves evil, (though some would disagree) they are of different quality. A banana is totally different than a piece of white bread, you know? A banana is good carbs, gives you energy to work out etc. White bread gives you nothing. So with mashed potatoes, the nutrition is not high. Do you like sweet potatoes? If you mash those up - much better carb.
So the quality of the carb is important and if you can have just a little.
I can't remember - are you working out at all? That enters into it. Without some good carbs, you'll bonk. I mean you need some carbs to use your brain, but most of us get those without trying.
I do go on, but I know this battle. One I think about every day. It is all a balancing act!
