Default What did you eat pre-op? lol

Man.. I was talking to a pre-op patient. So she was telling me how hard it's going to be casue she eats all the time and really likes food. You know the drill. So to show her that it is not a lost cause I share my typical day with her. Oh man... By the end I was crying. I've come to grips with it now but I haven't relived that experience in a while. Here is the typical day.

Ask the ex to make me toast while she is downstairs making her breakfast. 8 slices sometimes with peanut butter or cinnimon toast. She would then go to work. Now... I make my breakfast. Eggs and some type of meat or last nights leftovers. Then I would grab a box of cheezits or other cracker like wheat thins or triscut to take up stairs while telling myself this was my portion control for the day..(yeah a box of crackers). Then of course I would make lunch and dinner on top of that. It was usually some heavy stachy thing like meay and rice with some kind of sauce on top. oh geezz.. After talking with her I added up dome of the calories. All approx.

8 slices of toast with peanut butter = 1200
breakfast of 3 eggs and half a pound of whatever meats = 1000
Box of crackers = 1600
Lunch half a loaf of italian bread meat / cheese / mayo = 1400
Dinner (god knows what could have been a large pizza to whatever) = 1200
Big ass bowl of ice cream or a pint of ben and jerry's = 800

That was over 7000 calories a day. ugh.. Had to believe a person could do that to themselves. This was a typical day. Weekends would be worse because I decided to "treat" myself then. Sometimes I think I must have been suffering from temporary insanity.

Ed - INSANITY IS EXACTLY THE RIGHT WORD!!!!!

I didn't eat quite that way - never more than a "normal" serving (HA!) at a time. I kept myself from believing I was eating a whole box of crackers, or cookies, or whatever, by emptying the original box into a tupperware container or something, that way you couldn't tell how much of the original amount was being eaten.

My insanity was lying to myself, and maintaining the fiction that "I REALLY didn't eat THAT much!" The hell I didn't! Just because I NEVER ate a whole box of any food all at once, or a whole pizza, or a whole cake, a whole container of ice cream - doesn't mean I didn't eat a BOWL of crackers (with lots of cheese bits), then a BOWL of chips, then a BOWL of nuts, then several cookies (NEVER COUNT THEM!), then HAVE DINNER! And of course, after dinner, have more cookies and probably some ice cream ("small" bowl - about 2 cups [this is four servings....], topped with chocolate or caramel sauce, of course.)

Eight slices of toast all at once? Not me - I ate like a bird (they eat their bodyweight every day, I've heard...) - I ate "small" portions of LOTS of things, so I think I probably ate about the same number of calories as you did. And yes, this was a typical day - weekends, holidays, stress days (no more than seven per week), sick days, sad days, happy days - were all license to lay on a "little extra" for comforting my sad soul.

At Overeaters Anonymous, the term INSANITY is used a lot to describe the compulsive eating adventures so many of us indulged in.

I am SO GLAD to have that behind me. One day at a time!

Arrow Here's One for Ya

One day a few months ago, I found the website DietFacts.com. I decided to look up things I used to eat. OH MY GOD! I had NO friggin' idea how many calories I actually ate each day!

For an example, I looked up how many calories are in a large chocolate shake from Jack in the Box. I used to LOOOOOVE those things...probably had one at least every week or ten days as a treat. Wanna guess the caloric lowdown???!!

1310 calories
513 calories from fat
57g fat
178g carbs
158g sugar
31 points on Weight Watchers

Holy mother of...and I wondered how I got fat! I now eat less than 1300 total calories most DAYS!

It's just amazing the level of denial in a MO person. I'm so happy I am no longer an ostrich with my head buried in the sand. Thank God for FitDay.com to keep me honest!

Dude... I'm all about OA The fellowship is quite a bit smaller in Victorville and only 3 meetings a week. I was lucky enough to get introduced to OA when I was in San Diego and got a great sponsor. It has and continues to be one of the best things I have ever done for myself. The awareness that comes from the program has been so valuable.

Talking It takes all kinds...

Wanna hear what a "healthy" obese person eats? After my ex was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I dealt with it by overhauling our eating and following the MS diet guidelines. We were vegetarian for a year and vegan for another year - everything was organic and prepared from scratch.
  • 36 oz of protein shake (made with yogurt, fruit, milk, and sometimes sherbert)
  • 2-3 cups of coffee with loads of cream and sugar
  • a "salad": 4-5 cups of lettuce, 2 boiled eggs, carrots, tomato, cheese, nuts, the kitchen sink
  • a "snack" of 2-3 pieces of fruit or a couple cups of edamame (soybeans) or half a package of rice cakes
  • 2-3 cups of white rice with 2-3 cups of curried tofu and vegetables made with coconut milk and other fatty substances
  • half a pint or more of sorbet or sherbert - because I'd "been good all day"

Obviously, portion control was an issue for me

I never thought about how many calories I ate! The only thing that mattered was that is tasted like heaven and made me feel good! I always needed to FEEL GOOD! Until I noticed I couldn’t walk with out pain because my butt got too big!! Thank God I don't have to do that any more!

Default Anything I could get my hands on!

Lots of Fast Food, extremely high in Calories and fat,
Lots of Carbs, (pasta, rice, potatos)
Lots of Candy ( I would snack on it all day at work)
Large Fountain Coke once or twice a day.
Starbucks Frappacinos
Big old bowl of ice cream everynight before bed.

And I always felt like I was starving. Isn't that amazing.

For the first time in my life I feel like I am in control of my eating and don't feel like I am starving to death.

Life is great!
