Default To soup or not to soup - that is the question

My laproscopic RNY was done 3/5/07. I'm down 55 pounds since my surgery and a total of 80 pounds since I started my preop diet counseling and preop diet.

My dietician is very opposed to soup - "It's mostly water so it just goes right through. You won't feel full very long."

However, my experience is that I find soups very filling and satisfying. I can nurse a cup of chicken noodle (or other low fat soup that is less than 100 calories a serving) down in 30 - 45 minutes and stay total satisified until my next meal is due.

Is this OK or will I have trouble further on down the road?

P.S. My bariatric nurse, who is also a RNY patient, thinks soups "...are just great."

Soup is one of my favorites-but you should try to find one with a little more protein-like chili or even a small cup of cheese soup. It's yummy.

SOUP works for me ~ especially on days when nothing else will... just be careful of what is in the soup ~ ... also, soup is perfect way to add protein ~ mix powder protein in ~

My personal opinion?...SOUP!!!

My dietitian was the same way..."back away from the soup!". I just nicely nodded and went BACK to the soup! I'm like you, I'm totally satisfied and it doesn't cause me to want to eat between meals. I try to stick with the thicker, chunkier soups and stay away from creamed soups unless I made them myself so they are low fat, but other than that I would say go for it! It doesn't seem to be affecting my weight loss. I'm 16 months out and down 200 pounds and still losing slowly.

I like soup, but I would be careful about how creamy or startchy they are. I great vegetable beef soup can be satifying and nutritious but lets a chicken and dumplings which is both creamy and doughy may be a bad choice.

Default Cream of Tomato

One of my favorite things whenever my pouch is feeling used and abused is cream of tomato soup - half a cup and I'm good to go!

I understand the whole soup theory about staying away from it, but I love making homemade soups that have lots of protein and vegetables in it. That way, it's very satisfying and full of lots of good stuff for me. My favorite one is a minestrone soup using Italian turkey sausage, garbanzo beans, and lots of veggies. Yum...I think I'll make it for dinner tonight!

I could not have made it the first few month without soup. When I went for my 3 month check up, the Doctor told me that everything he could possibly test was NORMAL, so the soup didn't hurt me.

Thumbs up I would be .....

very sick or dead if I could not have had soup.I have used soup as a staple for over two years. You can add unflavored protien powder to it..to boost the protien intake.

All I can say is THANK GOD for soup,

I love soup but my pouch hates it. Creamy is good but if it is chunky with a broth I don't know what happens but it just doesn't stay down long. Like veg beef. I don't get it.
