Question The protein debate

This info was taken from Prevention.com, what is your guys take on it? Im a little worried... should I be?

"Eating larger amounts of protein backfires, big time. Too much won't allow your body to use protein's amino acids efficiently, and if that big steak dinner (some restaurant cuts are 32 ounces!) pushes you over your calorie count for the day, that excess protein is more likely to be stored as extra fat than as muscle. Take-home message: More than about 6 ounces of protein a day is protein without purpose."

The last thing I want to retain is fat! Does this exclude us as we malabsorp so much?

Inquiring minds want to know! That is so little in comparison to what we were told to eat.

After years of having animal protein as my primary source I changed to a whey isolate/concentrate blend with glutamine. I have supplemented my protein with that (added 100 grams a day). After a 2 month period the results were pretty good. Far better than I have had with anything else. I like it a lot. I regret I didn't do it sooner. I just feel better and the muscle mass started packing on with my workout. Good stuff. Whey protein is absorbed pretty quick and is used efficiently.

I use MyoPro Whey (EAS). Taste is not bad. Let face it tho.. It's not a milk shake by any means. Vanilla is my least favorite. The Banana and Chocolate isn't bad. I haven't had the strawberry yet. Here what I have learned from a variety of resources. Gastric bypass patients absorb approx 30% of the protien they intake. Great.. That was pretty useless info becasue there are so many types of protein and absorption variables you could be getting less. Whey is absorbed well and is efficient. Pure Isolates are absorbed rapidly but won't hold you for long. They are also pretty expensive. Overall I liked Myopro because of the price, quality, taste, and nutritional value.

GNC or Nutri-sport. Online might be cheaper if you don't have a GNC gold card. It's not the same as the one you see in Wal-mart so don't be confused. Here is a couple of links. The nutrional info is from last year. They boosted the protein by 2 grams.

Here is some info on Glutamine also that a lot of protein supplements are adding.

Ok I think I have a handle on this. It is basically saying that you can only absorb a certain amount of protien and there is a point of diminishing returns. The additional calories whether it is protien or not will be stored as fat. Makes sense. The think that doesn't make sense is that they are using ounces to measure protein. We all know different types of protiens carry different calories and comparing ounces could be an apples and orances type of thing. Also consider the absorption issues for the WLS patien and this article pretty much doesn't apply to us. What is is trying to stress is that just because it's a steak or prime rib doesn't mean it all good for you. The moral of the story... Use your head. lol

Okay, 6 ounces of protein equals 180 grams. Hope this helps.
