Default Confused about Sugar

OK everyone, I am pre-op, but i have been looking at food to buy to have around once the surgery is done. I was at the store today and looking at yogurt, i don't under stand how the "light" yogurt has more sugar than the regular and the Carnation Instant breakfast has like high sugar content.

Is there something I am missing? I thought we need sugar free things.

Please help, I am confused..

Thanks
Ronette

Carnation Instant Breakfast does make a sugar free version, and I lived on it for a while...very yummy. I haven't found a low sugar yogurt yet even at over a year out, so I have forgone the yogurt. Others have posted about Blue Bunny yogurt and seem to like it, but i can't seem to find it in my area. Look for sugar content to be 6-8 grams and see if ou tolerate it - many cannot tolerte any sugar, and some can...just depends on your lil' bod Good luck finding what works well for you...

Thanks..

6-8 grams in any food? This is so much to learn, i just want to make sure I try (for taste reasons) some things now and hopefully have them on hand for when I do have the surgery.

I will have to stock up, it isn't like there is a grocery store close by, I have to go 30 miles just to go grocery shopping (thank goodness I work in that town), otherwise I drive about 80 to go to Super Walmart.

Learning to read labels and to pay attention to what a person is eating is a whole new ball game. Like I said the this whole sugar thing, makes no sense why there would be less sugar in something light opposed to something regular. Of course there are reduced calories and fat, but the whole carb/sugar content concerns me.

Dannon puts out a yogurt called "Light and Fit". It's a carb and sugar control yogurt. I like it and have it for breakfast every morning.

Its so true to read labels. Milk even has sugar in it. So does fruit..but there is a difference between natural sugar, raw sugar and sugar alcohol. Key thing is what effect it has on you. Most of the time when something says light or low fat, it has more sugar to compensate for the reduced fats. I don't do anything low fat......yogurt is the one thing that I find tough to buy as there is so much sugar in it.

Carnation here is full sugar, I can't buy the low sugar one, but many do drink it. Be very conscious of labels, but just as much for sugar alcohols (sorbitol, manditol etc)

You won't know what you can tolerate till post op and then things change as time goes on. I can tolerate WAY more now that I could at 5 months out.

Yes, there is a Carnation Instant Breakfast that says "No sugar added". You will find it in a blue box. The yogurt I use is the Blue Bunny Carb Freedom yogurt. It's made with Splenda, is low fat and the highest protein out there in yogurt (9 grams). The rule of thumb that I go by when it comes to sugar is no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. But you do have to keep in mind that may be too high if you are extra sensitive to sugar. Something else you have to look at are the sugar alcohols. Some people have more problems with high sugar alcohol. I actually have more problems with that. Many of your no added sugar products will be high in sugar alcohol.

It is important to read your labels. It takes me forever to get through the grocery store these days since I read all of the labels!
