Default To the Squishies

Just make sure not to overbuy! I wouldn't buy more than single cans or packets, if that's possible, of anything, particularly the protein supplements. I'm sure you've seen this on the site, since you've been reading our posts already, but your tastes WILL change post-op. Something that tasted wonderful pre-op will taste awful post-op. And, oddly enough, vice versa. I just found out that I like tomatoes... and I've hated tomatoes all my life, wouldn't eat 'em on a bet. I just bought a couple cherry tomato plants so I can grow my own. Too funny. The only thing I've see with almost universal approval is sugar free popsicles.

Oh, and glad to be of service...

I use unjury protein... It's a Whey Isolate vs. Whey concentrate like the bullets that everyone talks about.....

It isn't a problem for people who find they have issues with lactose, hands down this stuff is the best. They just did a big testing on the other kind of Whey protein and I'll need to post it because it explains that your body can't really absorb all 25 or 42 grams of protein because of ... something. Never mind I'll just post the commentary.

Foods....

Beans of all types, cheese of any type, shrimp.... I love that stuff. Thsi one is bad... but spagehtti-o's with meatballs from the can, chili. I also make a lot of stews with veggies and meat, cut very small and then I put a scoop of unflavored protein in it. Avacados Rule!

In fact I put avacado with my beans and a little cheese and it's packed full of protein, potassium and good fats!

Supplements...

I use bariatric edge multi-vit, calcium, traders joes B-12 with B-6 & folic acid, Costco has a liquid calcium called Calexcel which tasted great but for some reason makes me sick...go figure. Oh yeah bariatric edge has a chewable iron that is really gentle on the stomach and a new B-1 supplement that I think is going well. My B1 was low.. not danergerously so but low.

Protein...

After trying about 50 different things, I settled with Unjury. It can only be ordered online and it can be a little pricey but The Queen (my pouch) tolerates it even when I feel nauseous. They have like 6 flavors and tons of recipes..... WWW.unjury.com

drinks... propel, lots of water, low-acid coffee, International cafes the SF versions, V-8 juice every day. I also drink a lot of crystal light.... strawberry lemonade is the best... I think. I use regular lemonade flaovr and then add the unjury strawberry sorbet flavor.

If you have a IBS and can tolerate yogurt try the new activa... I'm tryignit now and after two days the gas has started to calm down.

Default Forgot a few things...

Tuna/Bean/Spinach Salad -

I use one 15 oz can of white beans drained, 6oz can of Tuna.. I find regular tuna isn't as dry as solid white... one bunch of spinach chopped fine and a bottle of ginger dressing.

Mis this all together in a bowl and let it sit for a few hours. The spinch breaksdown a little and adds to the moisture. Thsi is full of protein and Iron and it tastes great.

I also eat polenta... especially when I need more carbs for the day.
Cottage cheese with beets.
Fresh Papaya is awesome to settle my stomach, I buy it every 3rd day at Trader Joes.
Mandrin oranges in the can, wash them first to get rid of the sugar
Strawberreis sliced with splenda sprinkled.

I hated all sugar substitutes before surgery now the taste of real sugar is so sweet it makes me gag...

OTC - Liquid Tylenol ... works great for me, even 5.5 years out, there are very few pills I take.

Thanks for doing this, it's a great "go-to" for when us long termers forget ...

Walmart sells a great protein powder called, "Body Fortress" mix it with a little crystal light and some frozen berries in the blender (yummy way to start the day)

I've been eating "lean pockets" quite a bit-they have a fair amount of protein and are yummy in the microwave. I like the pizza ones the best.

Zone Perfect meal bars are really good-(actually the only protein bars I like) sometimes I have them for breakfast when I don't have time to mix a shake-I like the chocolate mint, and the carmel coconut 15g protein

I also like single serve bags of beef jerky-the kind I found has only 90 calories and 12g protein.

I also found some cereal called "protein crunch" it's good too-15g protein per serving-but I found it in a "big lots' store-so I suppose I won't be able to find it again.

I also like the staples-frigo light string cheese, Wendy's chili, and just about any talipia-If you can get it-Healthy Choice makes pretty good kielbassi-it's one of the few meats I can tolerate.

Also-tuna (in water) mixed with ff mayo makes a good lunch with a few saltines.

And-yes I know it's not to be done too often but Lay's makes a great FF potato chip called "lites"-not to be confused with the awful baked ones-that you would never guess has no fat and about half the calories of the regular ones.

Default Just a note

I'm bumping this for newbies... and just wanted to tell you guys that, if I see something on here and have checked it out myself and thought it was not exactly right for newbies, I may not add it to the front. Not busting anyone's chops... but the ZonePerfect bars mentioned above can have as much as 17 grams of sugar. Here's a link to one of their nutrition pages, if you think I'm kidding: http://www.zoneperfect.com/products_...ut_butter.aspx. Personally, if it contains more than about 15 grams of sugar, I still dump on it, and I'm more than a year and a half out.

Also, I have found that I get absolutely excruciating gas pains from sugar alcohols, as do many of us. If the sugar alcohols are more than four or five grams, I get to suffer for a while. You may not be sensitive to them, but you need to be aware of them.

So, here's one more piece of advice for anyone getting their nutrition needs in order post-op: Look at EVERY label. Saw elsewhere on the site where someone had a dumping episode on beef jerky, checked the label after the episode and found out it had corn syrup in it. Even if you can't imagine that it would have sugar in it, look at the label anyway!

Everyone is different, and the only way to know what your tolerances are like is to try new things and see what happens. Especially in your early post-op, you might just try one new thing a day so you know whether that is the culprit if you feel pooky.
