Default What are the best types of vitamins to take?

I'm a month out, so I'm still on Flintstones chewables and Viactiv calcium chews.

However, I've read elsewhere that, even though my nutritionist at the hospital where I got my surgery done told me that Viactiv was fine, calcium citrate is better than calcium carbonate (which is in Viactiv).

If that's true, then what kind of calcium should I take?

Also - any recommendations for multivitamins and supplements?

Thanks!

Skinnymonkey,
Here at Dr Callery's we were put on multivitamins after 6 weeks (we were on Bugs Bunny kids vites til then). They recommend either pre-natal vitamins or Centrum complete after the 6 weeks. As for the calcium citrate the recommend Citracal or something similar. We were told to do Tum w/calcium carbonate for the first 6 weeks and then switch to the citrate. There can be a problem with kidney stones and such with the carbonate if you take it to long. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Supposedly, the calcium in calcium citrate is more easily digested and asorbed, so you get more into your system. I buy mine at Trader Joes along with the B-12 tablets. As for MVI, I take anything that's on sale.

Default Calcium citrate/whatever

At the last early postop meeting recently, the question of which kind of calcium to take came up, and Dr. Callery stated that the medical literature does not show any significant difference in calcium uptake (use by the body) between calcium citrate and calcium carbonate (Tums, etc.) - so he advised us to stick with what we like, what's cheap, etc.

I suspect the idea that calcium citrate is somehow better comes from some studies (not corroborated by others) and/or from marketing...

I'll stick with what Dr. Callery said - I trust him.
