Chewing Gum
I'm 1 week post op and can feel the bad breath coming on. I bought some sugarless (sugar free) Listerine strips and gum. Are there any rules for post-opers and chewing gum?

Some docs say no forever. Mine said I could after a certain amount of time... I forget what it was. When I went back to work I always had gum on me, I didn't want my dragon breath in my students faces....I just wish they would be so thoughtful towards me

This is what my surgeon said. The gum does not digest in our pouch and it can actually clog the opening into our intestines and it could have to be surgically removed. So, DO NOT swallow it if you chew. I was a little scared to even put a piece in my mouth at first because accidents do happen, but now I just put it in there when I'm not moving around alot or very busy and chew for a few minutes to get the flavor and mask my breath and then I spit it out.

It took me til this week to actually venture to the gum...but my breath is soooo bad, no matter how much I brush, floss and all that. Gum is my friend right now.

Just don't swallow your gum...I remember I couldn't remember where I put my gum...and I was paranoid. If you accidently do it, I think you will live...all I know is we can't swallow it. I never did before surgery, so I thought I would be ok...so far so good. My sister had to resassure me the day I thought I swallowed my gum that she actually saw me throw it in the trash...I still was freaked because I couldn't remember.

Chew on
I chew gum all day. And have no prob. Im sure swallowing gum would not be a good thing. But, my 2 year old can even chew it w/o swallowing it. So I feel confident that I can handle it.
