Questions about Pouch Rules
Hi everyone I new here, but I love this site!! I have read the pouch rules before, and they go against everything my DR. told me to do. I was told not to drink before meals, and to eat very slowly. Was anyone else told this??
Do most people on this site use the pouch rules?
I am worried about well....everything, I got my surgury on 9/28/05 I was 370 Today I am 277. I think that I am loosing very slowly compared to most people in the same time frame. I also am disgusted because I can eat anything, I was praying sugar made me SICK!! But it doesn't once in a while just a little uncomfortable. I do not ever feel full, but I try and stick to small portions. I need help, I am so worried that I will never be thin.
Please help me
Jessica

Hi Jessica! I als can eat ANYTHING!!! I also prayed to not be able to eat sugar. Alas I can, and do. I hate myself every time. DO not do this to you!!
I have been told many time on this board, it's stomach surgery, not brain surgery. This is so true.
I think most people's rules vary by surgeon. I would reccomend following your surgeon's advice to the letter. He gave you your particular guidelines because that is what he found works the best. I was also told to eat very slowly, but many people were told to eat quickly, and not have any meal last longer than 15-20 minutes. Every doctor varies. I like the "eat quickly" rules. It makes more sense.
Also, I think almost 100 pounds in 9 months is wonderful! I am 13 months out and am at only 99 pounds! You sound like you are doing great!
Oops! Gotta go, more later!

Hey Jessica......welcome to the board. I too questioned the pouch rules. I never really got satisfactory answers, so I go by my doc and what works for me. Some people print them out and ask their own doc of their opinion, and it seems some agree and some do not. I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. I am working on my issues with food and have started counseling. I have trouble mostly with snacking. This is a great place for support, but I felt I needed something more professional and personal to my own issues and behaviors in addition. Many of us here worry about whether we will get to goal and stay. I would not worry about the rate of loss.....as long as you are medically ok, then follow the rules and exercise and it WILL come. We all lose at varying rates. Be proud of the progress you've made and move along from here. Stick around, we are happy to have you.

Hi there,
I follow some but not all of the pouch rules. I do drink until I put that first piece of food into my mouth, and if I need to I will sip once or twice while I eat. Not full drinks even, I do try to wait half an hour afterward because it upsets my pouch too drink to soon after eating.
I do dump, but I don't get the racing heart. I just feel awful and I generally get diarhea, sometimes a headache and it is laborous to breath. It is not pleasant. I have to eat a fair amount of sugar to dump, sugar alcohol is the WORST. It makes me sick as a dog! I avoid it like the plague.
I think that as time goes by we all make small modifications as to what our body tolerates and doesn't. You just have to stick to the protien first ALWAYS rule and STOP when you are full. I think those are the two sticklers.

Thank You
I have contacted my dietician and asked her if we can make a menu up based on things that I like to eat. If I have a more structured schedule for eating and more balanced I think that will help. I want you to know that I have looked at other forums, and I am SO happy I found you all.
Thank you I feel better

The pouch rules are for patients who are more than 1 year out. Follow your surgeon's rule until then.

Jessica, it sounds like you are doing wonderful - I think your weight loss is right in line or even greater than some. Good for you.
Regarding food, my surgeon give VERY LITTLE advice. I had to ask him to find out what I needed. Regarding the pouch rules, he did say that the water loading prior to eating could be used IF I was dealing with hunger issues, otherwise there is no need to. There are some good tools in the "rules" but like the others said, stick with your doctors guidelines. I have to "find and seek" out things as I received one piece of paper with guidelines for everything (preop, postop, diet was 3 lines, contact info ect). This is a great place for support and knowledge as they are living it - I trust them wholeheartedly and when I have new info, I run it by the doctor if its a big item. If I didn't have this board....I would be lost.

That was a good idea. This whole journey is about tweaking it to work for YOU. It's great that you are really evaluating your habits and working toward good health. I agree about this board......the others seem to leave you hanging with no responses, or are just so big and hard to navigate. I read them once in awhile for some additional views, but I belong here.

Jessica, first of all you can forget about worrying about losing all the weight. It will come off eventually. I have lost slower than others too but in the long run it's better because it gives your body more time to adjust. I would suggest some counseling to eliminate the negative messages you are telling yourself. Be good to yourself, you have lost almost 100 lbs in less than a year! When did you ever do that in the past?
