I assumed I would be having the RNY because of it's success rate with Diabetes resolution; however, when I had my visit with the surgeon he recommended the VSG. He says my insurance covers it and he feels I'm a good candidate because I've only had diabetes for a short time (pre-diabetes four years & type II for about six months) and because of my lower BMI.

As I research, I see that the VSG looks like a viable option but I'm concerned about the resolution of diabetes. The RNY has such a track record. Losing weight is great but I really want to get rid of my disease. Any of you here with the VSG have their diabetes not resolve?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure how long it will be because I am not sure when I can pay the copay of 15%, but I'm already getting nervous about the surgery and reading the materials they gave me, contemplating the two week liquid diet beforehand and wondering how hard it will be to prepare meals for everyone else and not eat a bite for the two weeks leading up to the surgery. It must be done and it's all for the best, but that's the part that is stressing me the most right now!

Hi, does anyone know if bariatric surgery in some way affects the thyroid. I have been hypothyroid for the past 14 years. It has been managed well with medication. My meds have only been adjusted a few times throughout the past 14 years. I have been on my current dose of Levothroid for the past 3 years or so. I had VSG on 7/21, and I have been doing great. I went for my post-op blood work about 2 weeks ago, and it revealed that my thyroid was low. Which means that the meds aren't working anymore. I just find it odd that my meds have not needed adjusting all of this time, and now all of a sudden just a few weeks after surgery they do! Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks!

haven't been posting for a while, but have been reading. was stuck deciding between RNY and VSG, and have now made a decision! feeling really good about it, but now freaking. i swear that when i called my insurance co (CareFirst BCBS in VA) the woman i spoke to told me VSG was covered. now my hr person is concerned that it may not be and is checking with our insurance folks. i was so settled and feeling pretty calm about it, and now -- i just don't know. going to mexico is not an option for me (follow-up???), so it's ins or RNY. which i don't want to do for the usual reasons.

could use some moral support!! anyone else have my ins and was vsg covered? i guess it varies by what your co has set up with them think i'll call again right now and ask. maybe i'll get someone smart and not the idiot i got last time. the first time i called i got someone smart who told me what was covered, the second time -- dumb ass!!

thanks for being there! sorry so long!

I've had my band for 5 long years. All the hell I've gone through is somewhat normal to me at this point. I'm used to being primarily on liquids and pain when eating, etc.

My surgery is on Thursday for a Band to Sleeve Revision. Has anyone had one and regret it or wish they would have either not had surgery to begin with (no band, no sleeve), or regret/miss the band?

Thanks. I'm just having some serious doubts and after 5 years and 3 surgeons I am tired of being screwed over to line wallets. And I don't want to go into a much worse situation than what I'm dealing with now with my 2 kids under the age of 6.

So I am just off the fluids to full fluids, mainly yogurt and milk. I can eat a little bit of mushy fish and squished up soft meat, but I can't get veggies in and the wind(gas) well I was in agony.

I think I am a bit lactose intolerant now too, I had a cheese omelet, very soft and small, went down fine but soon I was in agony from trapped wind.

So I am 19 days post vsg and have been told to add in soft veggies and meat and fish, I have worked out my stomach is the size of a small hotdog, but I can't seem tollerate anything but little bits of soft fish and meat. Any vegetables and fruits and I can't get them down and what does go down seems to turn to horrid trapped gas.

Any advice welcome please.
I can find info on the company that makes it but most are in China and would want it bought in huge bulk orders.
From what I understand its good for pasta cravings and can have up to 20g of protein per serving.
Just wondering if anyone knows where it can be found and if they have tried it?:D

A California woman had 80 percent of her stomach removed through her mouth using a minimally invasive technique, according to surgeons who say it may be the first of its kind in the world.

Surgeons at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center performed the sleeve gastrectomy on Aug. 3. The patient, Connie Harris of Carlsbad, Calif., is recovering at home and doing well.

“We remove 80 percent of the stomach to try to create a sensation of fullness and make the patient lose weight,” said Dr. Santiago Horgan, chief of minimally invasive surgery and director for the UCSD Center for the Treatment of Obesity.

A sleeve gastrectomy allows patients to lose two to four pounds each week after surgery. Before surgery, Harris, 61, weighed almost 200 pounds at just 5-feet, 4-inches tall.

She lost a lot of the weight before surgery because she was put on an all-liquid diet, and now, after the surgery, she weighs 175 pounds.

“At some point, you tell yourself the truth that all of the diets that you’ve been on haven’t been working,” said Harris, adding that she’s been dieting since she was 7 years old. “I think it’s the future. I think people should really look into it.”

The sleeve gestrectomy incorporates two minimally invasive techniques – laparoscopic surgery and natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) – both intended to reduce scarring.

Five small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert the instruments used for preparing 80 percent of the stomach for removal. Then, surgeons use an endoscope to reach the stomach through the mouth and pull the divided portion out. The stomach is closed with staples applied through the abdomen, leaving the patient with a stomach about the size of a banana.

“By doing this, what we achieved was the possibility of doing this operation without any of the big scars on the abdomen,” Horgan said. “The patients don’t have pain, they have less chance of hernia and they have less chance of infections.”

The sleeve gastrectomy received approval as a bariatric surgery option in 2009 from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), "primarily because of its potential value as a first-stage operation for high-risk patients," the ASMBS committee wrote in a 2009 position paper.

The procedure can be used as an alternative to gastric bypass surgery – the most common weight-loss surgery in the U.S., according to the Mayo Clinic – or to better prepare extremely obese patients for it by reducing their risks through weight loss.

While a stomach reduction done through the mouth is less invasive than a gastric bypass, it still carries certain risks, including leakage at the site of a staple, blood clots and what Horgan calls the “unknowns” of any surgery. Horgan said that his team has not been able to identify any other similar procedures in the U.S. or the world, meaning this surgery may be the first stomach reduction through the mouth to ever be performed.

Horgan has performed more than 100 NOTES procedures, including oral appendix removal and gallbladder removal. The Center for the Future of Surgery team at UCSD was the first to perform an oral appendix removal, as well as an oral gallbladder removal, according to a press release.

“The number of options for minimally invasive weight-loss surgery is rapidly evolving,” Horgan said. “Our goal is to offer patients a customized long-term solution for losing weight with as few scars as possible, and if desired, no medical devices.”

“The main thing is that… I’m not hungry. I’m only eating about 500 calories a day. And that never happens,” Harris said.
After I was done I was sitting there and occasionally was coughing. It started to get a little worse and I though... maybe something is stuck... but nothing felt stuck and didn't hurt. All of a sudden I hack really hard and up comes foamies. (A whole napkin full) I was not expecting that. I coughed several more times and it was done.

What was that about? I have had foamies 3 times now. I thought VSG where not suppose to get them. And if this isn't foamies I don't know what is.

ann from va, dc metro area. i've come to a pretty clear decision that i want to go the vsg route, but haven't had my seminar with the vsg surgeon yet and not 'til 9/11. i'm so antsy waiting and wondering and hoping. my bmi is 50 and i have more than 100 lbs to lose, so i think i'll qualify for ins and i know my ins covers vsg.

i'd appreciate hearing from folks who have had the procedure, pros, cons, are you glad you did it, what's hard about it . . . anything that will give me more info as i come to this decision. it just seems more reasonable than a bypass (the -ectomy part is a little freaky, but at least i'd still have a stomach to absorb nutrients, etc.) and more effective than the band.

thanks all! i'm excited to be here!

Hi

I need to loose 150 pounds in all, to get me to 210 / 220 range, I have lost nearly 40 pounds pre op but will now need to loose another 100 to 120.

Has anyone from the 350ish weight range got down to 220 or less with VSG alone
