Hello Dr. Callery,

In feb 2004, I was a self-pay and went to France to have a gastric band (dr put in a swedish band, which was a total disaster for follow up). My BMI at that time was around 33. In 2006, it had slipped and I had it converted to a lap-band (here in the US). BMI was still...

Hello Dr. Callery,

In feb 2004, I was a self-pay and went to France to have a gastric band (dr put in a swedish band, which was a total disaster for follow up). My BMI at that time was around 33. In 2006, it had slipped and I had it converted to a lap-band (here in the US). BMI was still around 33. Now almost 6 years after I started, I am having complications with the band, plus my BMI is still around 33. So my surgeon recommended a GB conversion. He says the band doesn't work for everyone and at the end of the day, it's not working for me. I am scheduled for the surgery and am very excited about it, but am slightly concerned that this surgery is not really designed for me since I only need to lose 60-65 pounds. Do you have an opinion on that?

Thank you so much for making yourself available for questions and taking the time to respond.

The new surgeon wanted to do an EGD to check placement of the band before he did anything to it. When he performed the EGD, he told me that it appears as if the band has become unsnapped. He said it should look round where the band is placed. The side where the band is supposed to be snapped is bulging. Is this a complication of the band or have you ever heard of this happening before?

I will be 3 years post op on 03-05-07. In the past 4 months I have had a half dozen "attacks" of abdominal pain that cause my stomach to become hard as a rock. There is no pain radiating to the back, but I cannot sit or lie down. Sometimes it only lasts 15 minutes, once it lasted almost an hour. It is hard to take a deep breath and I notice that I start sweating during the pain. It has always subsided on its own.
I had lab work done on Saturday, Oct 24th and the only thing abnormal were that my liver enzymes were slightly elevated: AST 50, ALT 60, ALP 162. Total Bilirubin was normal at 0.5 I think the liver enzymes are elevated because my PCP has me taking 800 mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day for acute tendonitis in my left wrist (I am seeing a hand specialist this Thursday).
I live alone and I cannot afford a $500 ambulance bill, but when I have the attacks, I cannot drive. They do seem to occur after eating, but it is after things like a salad or diced chicken, fruit or even yogurt. I am not sure what to do except walk it off and keep trying to take even breaths, even if they are not deep breaths, until it passes.

I have seen here that the pre-op diet for the RNY varies greatly from one dr to the other. My Dr seems to be quite strict. My BMI has just fallen under 35 now 9 days into the pre-op 14 day liquid diet and surgery is this Wed.

Would one last meal with my family jeopardize my surgery?

Thank you...
