Sounds like a painful procedure. A friend of mine had it done - she was a squash player and I guess the constant pounding in the court made her veins blow. She had to be off work for a week, then had to wear special stockings - tight to keep down more swelling and bleeding. She used a cane to walk for a while but did recuperate quickly. Take care!

Corrine,
You are lucky that at least some of yours can be lazered- I was told mine are past that- I have 3 large ones on my right leg and 2 on my left being removed, then 2 small ones on my right being "treated" I was told I would have 7 incisions on my right leg and 4 -5 on my left- followed by 2 treatmens of sclero. My Doctor told me I could probably return to jogging 10 days later- that I will wait to see. I figured I need to get it done before they get any worse- I think it is called "ligation" (i always spell it wrongo makes me think of "litigation"- which I know isn't the correct word.
Hope your procedure goes well. I am approved for outpatient right now, but with my past history of problems, husband is a little concerned having me go right home so, we will see how they respond to that. I really am a chicken so, the thought of going through more pain is not sitting real well right now.
Oh wel, Life goes on-- if we are lucky.
Have a good night.
Amy H

I'm not looking forward to this Amy - and definately not having to do it twice.
I wish it could have been done as an outpatient but that's out of the question.
Ligation sounds so much nicer that "stripping" doesn't it! LOL

Do the veins get replaced? How does your blood flow where it needs to without them? I have noticed the veins in my legs bulging since I lost my weight but they are not painful. I don't know it that is something that might evolve in the future.
Corinne, it is so hard to imagine you ever obese, though I have seen the photo of the beautiful post op version of you. I am sorry to hear of your pending surgery. I did not realize you were having pain in your leg veins. Has it been going on for long? Any sense of whether it is more likely associated with having been overweight or if it may be a complication more likelly associated with GBP RNY?
And Shetaz, I can't get over your get up and go. It has taken time for me to mentally accept the fact that I am now physically able after having been hampered by weight for so long. How is it that you woke up one day and became a running/weight lifting machine?!

I don't have much in the way of pain. Bit of an ache at the end of a 11 hour day on my feet but it didn't worry me.
The swelling from the knees down was concerning but I now know that that's the blood pooling because the valves are pretty much shot.
And I have a large clump just above my knee on the inner right leg. Honestly, it's like a bunch of grapes. And when I exercise (or just standing) they enlarge, become hot and itchy.
I've also got some red, dry skin appearing and there's a chance that it could progress to ulcers.
I didn't know I had varicose veins until I lost weight. The more I lost, the more prominent they became. It was the doc at the Well Woman Clinic who picked it up. She took one look and made an appointment for me with the Vascular Surgery Dept. straight away.
There are many causes - some think heredity plays a roll. Females are four times more likely to get them, pregnancy is a common factor, obesity, prolonged sitting/standing etc.
Might be worth getting your veins checked out with your doc so they can keep an eye on them.

I think what happened is as I drop the weight the energy comes back and I am so restless that I have to do something. I think I am now a hyper ball mess most days...lol
Spending so many years sitting on the sidelines and being bored to death is finally over and I'm trying all the games. I still hate dodge ball but, found I still love wall ball though .
I used to be so obsessed about feeling so bad about myself and thinking I was not worth anything. Wishing I would be in a horrid accident and die . But now, my confidence is coming back and I see the value in myself. Its not the fact of others noticing (hubby actually cat called me and almost did not let me out of the house yesterday ) but, ME noticing the change in me. Not just holding my new size 10 jeans to my size 22W shorts that were tight just a couple of months ago but the little things of realizing that I weight less than my piano now.
Every day is a blessing and a joy. Discovery of running up 3 flights of stairs this morning to get into my office and not look, sound, and feel like I needed to call 911. Silly things like buying socks that fit my foot instead of my ankle.
