Default trouble motivating myself to exercise

I did not do much exercise right after my RNY. I started walking a few days after I came home from the hospital on my doctor's advice, but I found I couldn't get far at all before I got terribly out of breath. Turns out I had pneumonia, which I didn't learn for few weeks, but I think I actually had it right after surgery because of the shortness of breath. I just didn't realize I was sick and didn't get it diagnosed. Then I ended up in the hospital for a few weeks and it took a long time to recover after I got home.

But I did recover and I finally started exercising and I actually kind of liked it. I wouldn't say that I loved it, but I did it regularly, and I felt really good. I was doing water aerobics three days a week and walking on the other days. Some days I did water aerobics in the morning and then walked in the evening.

Well, then I had a back injury and couldn't exercise for a while. And then I had the trouble with my gall bladder and felt sick all the time, so I walked occasionally when I felt well enough, but not often.

Now I've had my gall bladder removed and I feel fine physically. I plan to go back to water aerobics, but I have to wait until I see the surgeon next week to get the OK to get in the pool. I was told I had to wait until my incisions were all healed up. But I can walk now. But I can't seem to motivate myself. I don't know what my problem is. I decided I was going to start out exercising three days a week and work up from there. Well, I went for a walk ONE DAY last week. None this week. I just can't seem to find the motivation. I don't know what's wrong with me.

Suggestions?

Kelly

Kelly - There's nothing WRONG with you. Exercise is a habit. One that is difficult to begin. Since surgery my motivation to workout comes in waves. Sometimes I'm very motivated and once I get into it, I don't want to stop. Other times I have NO motiation and can't make myself start. Unfortunately, I'm in one of the "other times" right now.

What I have found in these cycles is that getting started is the key for me. Well that and some form of competition. I tend to be competitive and need some serious accountability.

Try setting up a workout schedule and find someone who will check in with you every day to make sure you've done it. Having a goal helps. Some people make their goal to run a marathon - since I don't run, that doesn't work for me. But something like a massage, or a new pair of earrings might. You have to find what works for you.

I'm going to have to do this myself - starting tomorrow. I have been on this "other time" cycle for the last 3 months and its starting to drive me crazy. So beginning tomorrow - I'm going to do it.

If you can afford it and there is a facility near you, I recommend a personal trainer. I started up with one 2 weeks ago and I can't say enough good things about him. He knows all the problems that develop with carrying extra weight including posture issues, muscles that are overcompensating/undercompensating, etc.. On the motivation front - you paid money up front for these services and people hate wasting money so you'll most likely go.

Find something you like doing. Exercise can be so much fun!!

I started with the Latin Dance class, I still go once a week. Then I went to martial art school (Tae Kwon-do) I absolutely love and I go 3-4 times a week.

If you can find walking/exercise partner it will be very helpful! You'll motivate each other and you will not be bored walking alone.

Good luck!

Sounds like you really like water aerobics and will do that as soon as you're cleared. Don't beat yourself up -- you've got a plan as soon as the doctor gives you the okay. If you walk, you walk -- but if you don't do anything until you can get in the pool, at least then you'll be back to doing what you like, and, it sounds like, you'll stick with it. Be good to yourself -- your body's been through a lot. I think it would be fine to wait until you can get back into the pool -- and then do it with a vengence.

Take care of yourself,

I don't like to exercise. I'm good at walking the dogs and will take up to a 3-4 mile walk with them, but other than that I get bored with it all. In May I discoverd YOGA, and I love it. I have Meniere's Disease and my treating doctor referred me to YOGA to help with my balance and it's such a blessing. I am feeling toned and fit.
