Congrats on the great weight loss and wonderful motivation you have for exercise. Only you(and your Doctor) can decide when you "feel" up to running. I walked for a long time basically because of the bounce. Mine wasn't incisional pain, just the extra "me" hanging around. Just my opinion, but- you do what "you" feel is best and when you feel your body is healed and ready.. Congrats..

I haven't had surgery yet so I am by no means an expert, but this question was asked and answered at my surgeon's support group meeting last month. We were told no bike riding until we are 4 weeks post op. The reason given was that we should not do anything that could put strain on our abdomens.

Well, I haven't really started running yet. I have walked with the family to a playground with basketball court about a mile away. I've shot hoops there for 30 minutes to an hour, which does include some light jogging sometimes to chase the ball. Then we walk back.

So, about 2 miles walking and some moderate cardio in the middle.

The other day, we actually did more like 3 miles and the basketball.

I've been thinking about getting a bicycle as well.

Thanks for all the advice - I may have to try compression shorts. As for shoes, I've got a pair of Skechers running shoes. They are actually very comfortable for me, and feel great during the exercise. I was skeptical with the brand not being known for athletic shoes, but they've been great.

I highly recommend getting some good shoes. I was a skeptic until my sister dragged me into a running store that specializes in shoes. They put me on a treadmill and analyzed my foot action. Based upon that information they recommended some shoes, OMG! I could not believe how well they felt. After that, running for me was a lot easier.

THat was last October and I am now on my 3rd pair of running shoes and getting ready to do the Portland Marathon this sunday!! I was NEVER a runner before, but it has been a great form of exercise for me this past year.

Good luck and congratulations!
BRAVO MIKE! I am so impressed-good luck at the Marathon, I'll be thinking of you!
