Ugh.. everyone loses weight at different speeds, so I hate it when a doc shoots a patient down that way.. talk about heaping guilt when you're already feeling bad enough

Trust me when I say I understand your frustration. I've been cutting calories and monitoring everything on thedailyplate.com to take off the weight. However, just hang in there. My suggestion to you, as I had to same concern and brought it to my best friend who has a nutrition degree was that you need to eat the small things 5 to 6x a day. Don't eat MORE or cut more things out, eat the same but more often.

The key to not slowing your metabolism down is to maintain a regular blood sugar level through out the day. In order to do this, you must eat more often. For example,

8am: 2 eggs & veggie omlet
10am: string cheese
12pm: 1/2 tuna on toasted wheat, carrot sticks with 2tsp of hummus
2pm: 9 raw almonds
5pm: 4oz baked chicken, green beans

Cut out your lunchables. They're loaded with fat and sodium that'll make you retain water. If you enjoy the lunch meat, try for oscar mayer's 98% lean turkey, white mean with 25cals and 5g of protein per slice, and whole wheat crackers. If you're short on time, grab a muscle milk with 20g of protein and 150 cals in a 8.5oz juice box.

Hang in there and best of luck with your goal! I'm in the same boat with you and I'm always here if you need some support.
I agree with most of this, though I would say- we can't know if she should be adding or subtracting food, given the little info in this post- maybe you're more aware of what she's eating otherwise, and if so I apologize. But with the little bit in this post above, I can't tell. Perhaps she's not eating enough calories at all, or is eating too much or of the wrong things (perhaps too carby?)

And though I totally agree with you on cutting out the lunchables as pretty much chemicals in a box, but I'd say at 4 months out, it'd be better to eat that deli meat and cheese wrapped in lettuce leaves instead of carby crackers. Crackers have been such a huge downfall for sooo many people here it's just a really bad habit to get into so early out.

other than that, I'd agree with the basics of what you've written.. small, frequent meals work well to keep things on an even keel.

Hi Kel,

The whole wheat crackers are more about being able to replace things with healthier options rather than eliminating them entirely. I should've made the distinction that the if you were to replace the lunchable crackers with whole wheat crackers, you can only eat 2 of them; as they are, very carby. I'm not a cracker fan but I was hoping to give her a choice.

A nutritionist will do wonders for you. It's te combination of foods, not only the calories. Made a huge difference!

Just a little added info - I thought, at one point, calorie intake was THE important thing (it is, but there are other aspects, too). I was getting 1,000 calories a day, but some of that was the 100 calorie snacks. I gained weight. When I eliminated the amount of those snacks, and added appropriate foods (based on the nutritionist's info), I continued the 1,000 calories a day, and lost weight. That concept continues to be true.

See a nutritionist.

Claire, I am going to follow your advise and see the nutritionist at my surgeons office. Being only 7 weeks out, my head still tells me what doctors, friends and books have told me all my life, "cut out the calories and the weight will fall off!" It may be true for short term weight loss, but a balance is needed for the long term plan!

Default New York Times article

Hey Everyone,

I just read this article in the NYT about exercise. This part stood out to me the most but I've also included the link. Hope it's helpful.

“If you work out at an easy intensity, you will burn a higher percentage of fat calories” than if you work out a higher intensity, Carey says, so you should draw down some of the padding you’ve accumulated on the hips or elsewhere — if you don’t replace all of the calories afterward. To help those hoping to reduce their body fat, he published formulas in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research last month that detailed the heart rates at which a person could maximize fat burning. “Heart rates of between 105 and 134” beats per minute, Carey said, represent the fat-burning zone. “It’s probably best to work out near the top of that zone,” he says, “so that you burn more calories over all” than at the extremely leisurely lower end.

You are at a point where you will get the MOST from a nutritionist. He/she will provide you with such great info, given that it is the nutritionist from the surgeon's office. PERFECT. I promise you that you will be so pleased with the understanding that you get.

About exercise, in the above post, my spin on that is that if you exercise every other day (NOT every day), and acquire DIFFERENT exercising techniques over time, that it will be as important as any other aspect of weight loss. In the long haul it's all about good habits, whether you are on week 7 or week 307.

The very best to you - PM me if I can help.
