my husband is in the Air force and the sports physiologist at the base highly suggested Asics Gel Nimbu 8, 9, or 10. Both my hubby and I wear them and cant find a better sport shoe.

New Balance. Not only do they have different widths, but different lasts, as well.

I like New Balance...but they're not all the same. Go to their website, and you can read up on the attributes of each shoe. Different ones are good for different needs. Most places don't carry a very good selection...but Zappos.com carries most of the styles (free shipping and free returns...in case you buy the wrong size).

I'm lucky that I have a New Balance store near me...I go in, they look at my foot, recommend a specific pair of shoes, and watch me walk in them to check my gait.

Unless your actually playing tennis I wouldn't recommend tennis shoes....unless thats just what you call all sneakers LOL. When
someone says tennis shoes I picture Keds - ouch!
I have been an Asics devotee for over 20 years now - I always
buy running shoes because they have more pad and give since
they are intended for pounding on the pavement - even though
thats not what I do with them..... yet.
My feet are BIG and high - so although not wide I often either
have to buy wides, or go up a size but in Asics my size always
fits perfect. And with sneakers - go to a store and try them on.
Unless there is a brand you always buy and know how it fits
you could end up doing a lot of returning if you buy online.
Something I like to do is pick out my shoes and then go online
and see if I can find them cheaper. Hope this helps

I would definitely go to a bigger shoe store and try on different ones. I love Nike and New Balance. But every once in a while a pair just doesn't fit right. Make sure when you try them on, do a little exercies with them (what you are planning to use them for). It may feel silly but you should be able to tell if they fit well. I just bought a pair of Nikes that I tried on in the store and walked around in them. They felt great. Got home and used the elliptical and they were killing my feet (kept digging in the side and squishing my toe).

New Balance...I just got my new ones today at the new balance store..I use walking 845..I have had achilles tendonitis in the past and my ortho told me to get new balance with stability and an sl2 last.....Check the new balance online store to figure out which ones would be good for you...I was in a cast for 5 months in 2004 because of the achilles tendonitis and after I got rid of the cast I started with the 842 ( upgraded to 845) and have been wearing them since then and no more problems with the achilles... That says alot....

I did the same thing. I read reviews online about the new Under Armour cross trainers and even went to the store, tried em on, walked, jumped...they felt great. I got to the gym, got on the elliptical and they dig into my left toe. Not even both, just the left one! So, I've worn them once and now they're sitting in my closet, $100 later...
I just ordered my new New Balance online. I've worn lots of NB, and just ordered the 1010 cross trainers, so I'll let you know how they work out...

I wear Brooks Adrenaline GTS, love them. Just make sure you get fitted with the right model for your individual width and arch. I have walked 3 half-marathons and bunch of 5 and 10 K's all at 200+ pounds and have always been happy with Brooks. I have also heard fantastic things about New Balance, but have never owned a pair myself.

I went to the athletic shoe store at the end of my day and tried on shoes to make sure I got the one I wanted for what I was doing. Back then I was jogging and found that my newbalance shoes were great for walking but were too stiff for jogging. So, I use newbalance for walking and brooks for jogging (which I have not done for a LONG time but will soon!)
