That's it! I'm throwing in the gym towel! *lol*

Not really. For me, exercise alleviates boredom (when I'm more prone to snacking). I like how I feel after an hour at the gym as opposed to how I feel after an hour of sitting around watching t.v. Since I drink a protein shake right after exercising, I don't run out to the nearest fast food joint to eat and I'm satisfied. Interesting article, though.

Default Wow!

I read this entire article and this was VERY interesting. Now I do not feel so bad for not able to walk outside in the hot sun lately, but I am moving around in the house more. Thanks Lynette for posting this.

Well.....I hate to say it but this article is pathetic and nothing but a JOKE! It is unmotivating and is not good for anyone to read. There are plenty of benefits to working out on a regular basis, and for WLS patients it is one of our requirements to be successful.....

It is all about common sense....Do you want to spend an hour a day at the gym and then stop at McDonalds on the way home to eat that Egg McMuffing???NO...
Do you want to go home and eat that giant Otis Spunkmeyer muffin, NO...
Yeah sure you are hungry, that means that you had an amazing workout, heck if I did not come home hungry I'd be worried that I did not work out to my full potential. When I come home I eat a hard boiled egg, string cheese, or a yogurt. Some mornings I will have my lean ground beef or lean skinless chicken breast.

It comes down to being sensible and smart. Everyone knows that exercise stimulates a healthy mind as well as body. Kind of like mind over matter. When I get up and go to the gym in the morning it is hard, I am not going to lie. But there really is no excuse. I have to get up at 4:30 am because it is the only time I can go, I have a two year old at home, and I make it work.

9 months later and 100% consistency of going on a daily basis, has transformed me into someone that I never thought I could become. Both mentally and physically.

Exercise is a HUGE part of my life and I personally consider it the most important part of this entire process. Look at the number of people on here who post about having to have revisions....The majority of them did not follow the rules of working out and eating right. Diet is only a part of this.

Don’t let this article pollute your mind in that you will burn more calories by sitting on a couch. It is a bunch of hogwash. Get up off the couch and let this article motivate you to do what you know needs to be done.

We are no longer part of the Morbidly Obese category or statistics. I am set out to motive everyone on here to get up and get moving! If I can do it, anyone can. All is takes is the will and right mindset!

LOL!!
Like you I started to get really pissed off reading this article but I read the whole thing and started to understand what they are saying.

I do agree that after I've busted my ass for 90-120 min that I don't wanna do anything else for the rest of the night cause I'm pooped and it feels GOOD! I also think I grab some yogurt and granola and mess up some of the hard work I did.

I think the point of the article is NOT to stop exercising, it's telling you to do different exercise.

Instead of going to the gym and busting your ass for an hour or two and risking making yourself so hungry plus risking burning muscle mass, you should do things like cleaning house, biking or walking for 15 minutes, taking the stairs, parking farther away from the stores etc..

Although the article made me a bit angry because I think it will make people stop exercising (especially if they didn't read it all cause the article is so long!) it does make a lot of sense. People were thin for a very long time and gyms didn't exist, just normal manual labor did.

Regardless of how you feel after reading it, moving your butt is IMPORTANT! Remember that and you'll be fine!

Talking

I think it depends how you look at things. What I got from this article was that I should not feel like I can eat more or treat myself after my trip to the gym. It did give some useful info on how I can sabotage myself or how exercise and food can cross cancel themselves if Im not careful.

My $0.02 - This is an Op Ed.

My Cloud is trying to prove his assumption that people will eat more if they workout using survey results and mostly unrelated studies.

Interesting hypothesis, but nothing was proven in this article.

Yeah but the correlation between more gym memberships being bought and obesity increasing over the last 30 years is interesting. Could be unrelated in fact, but it is interesting.

Ok, this article is a piece of crap. I couldn't even read the whole thing, so you can hold that against me if you want but it's ridiculous. This author sites a bunch of different studies that have nothing to do with each other and uses them to try to help his opinion. And that's all this article is, his opinion. Yes, people did not used to have to go to the gym back in the day, but that's because they worked the farms and manual labor and kids played outside all day instead of being in front of a computer or tv. There also wasn't a fast food joint on every corner and our foods weren't filled with lots of chemicals and preservatives.
As for me, I feel a hell of a lot better going to the gym every day than if I were to sit on the couch for that 90 minutes. I have a lot more energy. And if I do get hungrier, although usually it's the opposite, I feel like eating a healthier food. I feel like why would I want to go to the gym and spend all my sweat and hard work, and then completely negate it by eating crap? I'm not saying I never cheat, but it's not like this guy is putting it, that I want to reward myself because i just worked out so hard.
I think another point that this article doesn't hit on very well is that while I'm sure most of us at the gym are striving to lose weight, there are also many other benefits, like improved mental health and the reducing the risk of so many diseases.
When it comes down to it, common sense is your best bet. We all know that we should get some exercise every day, limit our sugars and fats, watch our portions and drink lots of wine! Ooops, did I say that? Hey, it's good for the heart right? I'm sure I can find an article on that to support my case!
