Default I tried and I failed

Ok so I got all excited and motivated to go to the gym today. The hubby even went with me to help. I thought down 30lbs since my surgery it would be easier to move. I thought wrong! Tried an eliptical machine and a recumbent bike and both hurt my knees so bad after 5 minutes that I wanted to just lay on the floor.

I am so dejected by this. Seems like the only thing I can do for exercise without being in extreme pain is swim. Is that enough?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My doctor told me that swimming is one of the best exercises you can do because it works all your body parts. Everything gets a work out. So I would say yes.

Swimming is an awesome exercise for the whole body. You move and use every single muscle in the body, so if swimming is the only thing (right now) that keeps you pain free........

SWIM....SWIM....SWIM!!!!

When you drop more weight, try the elliptical and the other machines again. Don't let what happened get you down, it takes time to build your body (strength wise) up from not exercising they way that you are now.

Yes swimming can be an excellent exercise. also have you every tried a water aerobic class...You really get a good work out...with no pain and it is really a lot of fun. I used to teach a class at the YMCA... I miss it so much. I am thinking of joining the wellness center (the only place with a pool here), but it is $68 a month....a bit steep. I so want to get back to the pool....

My doctor has recommended that I swim, as it's the best that I can do for *all* of my body. So, yes.. swim, if that's all you can do!

Be proud of yourself for getting things going.. and keep it up!

Swimming is excellent exercise. In fact, my doctor recommended "water walking," just walking in chest-deep water, as great exercise. And a water aerobics class is a great idea, too. I take water aerobics a couple times a week and I like it a lot. Wait and try the ellipitcal or the bike a few months down the road. But swimming should be fine for now.

Thank you all for the encouragement. It means so much. Swimming it is then until I get more of this weight off and some of the pressure off my joints. I think my brain is in skinny girl mode and my body reminded me today that I am skinnier but still a big girl, lol.

I took this from you because it is 100% TRUE, ACUALLY 1000% TRUE,

I had my surgery on 2/10/2009 and started at 270 just 5 pounds less than you , Im pretty much 6 months out and Im down to 190. I have went from a 22/24 to a 14, and it won't be long till I be in 12. And I feel great. Its the best thing I ever did. Except marry my sweet husband and have my two wonderful boy's. You will see the next 6 months will fly by and you will be telling yourself WOW, WOW, WOW. everyday.

You did it though!!!! You made it to the gym... that is a HUGE accomplishment in itself!!!! 5 minutes on any machine is 5 minutes MORE than you did the day before!!!!

Don't stop now and please, please, please don't feel dejected or bad about yourself... you still DID IT!!!!

There is no book or manual that says you have to jump on an elliptical for 20-30 minutes.... 2, 3, 4, 5 minutes is still awesome. Take baby steps and build just a little every week, if need be.

Just walk (or swim like everyone else has mentioned!) ... walking is awesome for you and gets things pumping and your body moving and won't make you feel bad!!!

You did great and should be proud that you got in the building in the first place, I know that was always the hardest thing for me.

Sweetheart...nobody starts with 30-60 minutes on any machine. I couldn't even do a minute on the elliptical when I started, but now do an hour each day...do what you can..work up...I have knee and hip issues. I do one hour each day on the elliptical, and have recently added water aerobics. I LOVE IT! The hardest part is getting started, keep going...you are your own miracle! Congratulations on getting started.
