Question 1/2 marathon?

I'm 2 days pre-op. A friend (who doesn't know I'm having surgery) just challenged me to do the Huntington Beach 1/2 marathon on Superbowl Sunday. I've done two 1/2 marathons before, alternating between running and walking (mostly walking), but it's been a few years, and I'm at my absolute heaviest and laziest.

Is it possible I'd be ready to run/walk 13.1 miles in 5 months, assuming I really dedicate myself to working at it? It'd be a great motivation, but I don't want to set unrealistic goals for myself.

Advice?

That is up to you and your body at 5 months. Me, I'm a fast healer and did well from day one after surgery.
My surgery was Feb 5, 2009 and I walk 6 miles 3 times a week and then the rest of days is 3 to 4 miles.
If it was me I'd say yes I would be ready with more intense training, but that is me and my body.

Hi there,

I know for me- I'd like to challenge myself to a 5k first. But being super lazy and being 5 weeks out... I haven't really done much exercise yet. So would I commit to a 1/2 marathon at my 5 month mark?? Hell no! haha.

It is such an individual thing. I do think that it would be a great thing to strive for, even if you don't end up doing the actual marathon. Maybe commit to training with her, but not to the actual race until you know if you are up to it?

Good luck and make sure to let us all know if you decide to do it!

I just signed up to do the Carlsbad 1/2 marathon in January ... that will make it 6 months post-op for me. Kind of wondering the same thing. I guess if I start training now, I'll know as I go.

Default I say go for it.

Well,

I wrote a long message yesterday in response to your questions about doing a 1/2 marathon. The connection I had with te internet went down, I lost what I wrote, so- I am just going to summarize: I would definetly sign up- Having a goal to work for is a good thing. If you aren't up to running, as you said- walk part of it. DOing something is better than doing nothing. I just started running about 8 months ago- never was a runner and have done a few 5 k's, 3 -10k's and am scheduled for my first 1/2 in 2 weeks.
I never had any idea what to expect-Not being part of any formalized running competitions before, I never could have imagined the "competitive" aspect I would have in this area and the satisfaction I felt when I completed each race.(now I am hooked)It as also been the BEST form of toning and weight loss assistance I have had.
For me- my surgery has been filled with complications and problems: running for me is a chance to "escape those negative aspects" plus being able to see a "finish Line". I haven't yet found the end with my health issues, but, it is nice to work towards improving my time, completing the race, and seeing an actual "finish" line and being able to cross it.
I say--- Go for it-- Good luck with yoru surgery, your success, and your future life.

God Bless,
Amy H

Girl in 5 months you could easily be at 150 lbs or so, loving life, and ready to kick ass! Training for the marathon will help you drop weight and get fit. Sunday's your 4 week mark! That means on Monday morning you can start it up. Start walking a little everyday til you're able to do that 13 miles. I bet you can be ready in 3 months. 5 months is a piece of cake! You can do it!
