Default Cardio or Strength Training?

Ok, so watching Star Jones on Oprah yesterday, she was saying how important Pilates was after GBS because it really helped with toning the muscle and skin she was losing so rapidly right after surgery.
So, my question is, at this point, or when we're cleared for exercise and lifting more than 20#, do you think that cardio or strength training is more important? They did stress quite a bit in my classes how important it is to retain your muscle. And the big hype these days is how strength training will help burn more calories anyway. So, when I am cleared to go to the gym, what should I do? I'm just walking on the treadmill and doing Wii Fit step aerobics for now.

I believe they are both very important. Initially i say cardio, but introducing strength training not only makes your workouts easier because your muscles are stronger. But you also get the benefit of burning additional calories with strength training your your calorie burn is longer after you stop working out with strength training. Some things like the new video i tried, incorperates all of it. The Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. I got this, tried it, made it through 8 minutes and turned it off. Not because it wasnt good, but because I just couldnt push through anymore. I am SOOO sore today so it obviously worked very well. IT especially worked my arms and thighs! So i suggest it for anyone but it seems more for the advanced.
Both are very important. I would suggest initially cardio for 2 weeks. Then 1 or 2 strength days (wii fit has those too) with your cardio on other days. Then eventually you can do both in one day focusing on different muscle groups. Abs are the only muscles that should be worked daily!

Thanks Kimber

Schweeeeeeeeeet

For every 3 pounds of muscle you build, you'll burn an extra 120 calories a day -- just vegging -- because muscle takes more energy to sustain

I am also walking on the treadmill. I am doing 40 minutes a day and I keep switching in between 3.2 mph and 3.6 mph and I also change the incline at the same time within each workout. My question is I want to start toning my stomach when can we start doing situps??? I want to start now!!!! Can we hurt anything almost 4 weeks out???

yeah you can.

I was told no heavy lifting nothing over 15 lbs for at least 6 weeks. but no real heavy weights for a good 3 months. I think that might be a little cautious. But id check with the surgeon. Dont want to start compressing and tugging on your insides until they are well and healed.

yeah, I definitely agree about the no sit ups. I'm on no lifting over 20# for a month and nothing other than walking for 6 weeks, but it won't hurt to ask my surgeon at my 1 month follow up next week. I'll see what he says, but I really can't imagine doing cruches just yet. Don't worry, it will all start falling into place. For now, Heather reminded me about starting with skin firming lotion. Who knows if it really works, but I'm gonna give it a shot so that by the time I can start lifting, my skin will be ready and supple!

Starr Jones is first and foremost an admitted liar! She had stuff lifted...so if you want her type of result, please start saving for plastic surgery!
If you are looking to burn calories and make your heart healthy...do cardio (it's my total regimen) however...my TRAINER says to do strength BEFORE you go into your cardio routine, because it releases whatever is needed to get the calorie burn going when you start with your cardio...so the simple answer is BOTH...I dont' like that answer...I'm pretty happy just doing the elliptical...

yea, i am still not doing sit ups almost 3 months out. Just scared i guess. Planning to start next week though!!

I think the reason why we start cardio first after surgery is because strength training usually uses muscles we may not beable to use yet.

I know i am in serious pain after doing 8 minutes of a 20 minute video!! LOL

Heather, they say the first 15 minutes is the WORST,and I agree...once I get thru that first 15, I can make it to an hour...on the elliptical, I like to break it up, I go 8 minutes forward, 2 backward...it helps to break up the hour...you can do it ...I started much further out than you...you're doing great!
