Default Help/Input please?

Hey guys.

I'm feeling kind of discouraged at the moment. I've been working on increasing the amount of physical activity I do because I've been drifting along for months content to lose weight by just restricting what I eat and I've decided it's time to do more...

What I've found as I've increased my activity is that I get sore much more easily than I did in the past.. some of that I'm sure is due to the fact that "use it or lose it" has set in and I've lost some muscle mass in the process of losing weight :/

It's gotten to the point where I have really sore hip joints to the point it's painful to walk and I limp around (I was on a lot of tylenol over this last weekend from just one workout )

I'm finally (3 days out) starting to feel achey rather than limping pain sore and I want to go about this in a way that will be good for my body and rebuild what I've allowed to deteriorate and to get to a good place of physical endurance and stamina etc etc etc but I really have no idea what to do.. where to set my starting point, what to do to either build up or protect my joints while I exercise.. and the arc of progression...

any suggestions or similar experiences?

:P if you're new to the surgery get out and walk so you don't end up in this situation... (jeebus I hate being the example of what-not-to-do :P )

This is a toughie for me because I jumped on the exercise wagon fairly quickly. I did, though, suffer from tremendous soreness in the beginning and I got tired very fast. You just gotta do as much as you can without hurting yourself. Focus on low impact exercises to protect your joints. If you have a gym membership, use the bike or the elliptical. If not, walk slowlyeveryday for 15-20 minutes (I seriously mean that too!...EVERYDAY!!). Make sure you stretch properly every time you go. That's imperative to your muscles repairing themselves. If you do any strength training make sure you plug in a bit of cardio afterwards to get the blood flow to your muscles to move out that lactic acid that's built up in your muscles. As your muscles get stronger, you'll be able to do more and more. Challenge yourself biweekly to add a couple more minutes to your walk. Eventually, you'll see progression, but it takes time.

I definitely recommend the Walk Away the Pounds series to start. I really enjoyed doing that right after my surgery. I did not feel sore afterwards and it was an excellent way to start my exercise journey.

Don't get frustrated though, just do it. It's good for you anyways, even if it's just a few minutes at a time.

Splendifor: Is that really your name?

Anyway.........if you have lost much weight at all - like even 20-30 pounds, you body re-distributes itself on your legs. Your stance and your walk with both change as pounds come off. Therefore you are using your muscles differently, and they will hurt for awhile.

Don't give up. As you lighten up, you will feel better about walking.

Also, I invested in a good pair of shoes - all leather SAS for walking.

I am having so many problems with my hips and I am hobbling around. What I was told is because I lost weight so fast that my center of gravity changed and my core is not strong enough to support the exercise I am doing. My body starts pulling muscles in the hip area to compensate for the lack of core stability and damn it hurts. It seems to be getting worse for me and I am checking my doctors schedule so that I can have something for the pain. If they tell me anymore I will be sure to let you know.

Well I should thank my trainer then because the first thing he got me working on is my core. I do feel good inside. I even have a nice walk now and good posture...

*smacking head with hand* duh.. the nurse at our informational meeting emphasized core training right off and I forgot all about that :P

so.. 2 things - one I am following a walking workout audio I have on my mp3 (music that has a warm up, exercise and cool down tempo for walking) and now I'm gonna blow up that balance ball I bought after the abovementioned informational meeting and begin working on the core muscles.

thanks guys - and any further developments and/or input is appreciated!

Jacki (forgot I took that out of my sig when I changed it haha)

Hi Jacki, I have a few suggestions in addition to those already made.

First, find an activity (or activities) that you love or can grow to love. Exercise must be a crucial part of your post-op life, if you want to keep off the weight you're losing, so it needs to be enjoyable. I'm not saying it should be something "easy" or painless - I don't disagree with the "No Pain, No Gain" adage Inky-E mentioned - but it should be something challenging that keeps you making progress, and it needs to be something that you develop a passion for (think about Gina in NY and her cycling, or Inky-E and his bodybuilding).

Start small and make progress - if you choose swimming laps, for example, try swimming for 5 or 10 minutes and see how you do - if you can do more, do it. If not, then next time, add a minute or two. Each time you do it, swim a little longer. Don't beat yourself up because you can't swim for an hour - eventually you WILL, if you "keep coming back". Wherever you start from is irrelevant - it's the progress you make that's important!

Mix it up - your body can get used to routines very easily, which diminishes the benefit of the exercise if you keep doing the same thing, so vary the types, duration, and intensity of your activities. For example, you can swim one day, the next day use the treadmill, and then the following day use the elliptical. If you're doing strength training, you can increase your weights from workout to workout as you progress in strength, so that it never gets easy and your muscles are always challenged.

Also, try to work up to getting multiple types of exercise as part of your life - strength exercise (weight or resistence training), cardio conditioning (walking, swimming, cycling), and balance and flexibility exercise (yoga, tai chi, etc.). It's great to strengthen your core (your balance ball will be really helpful) and many of these activities do that - you can get a lot of benefit from different types of exercise.
