Default Ok, I need to step it up!

Well, the surgeon told me today to start aerobics and weight lifting 4-5 days a week. I have been walking 1.5 miles a day but he wants me to step it up to the aerobics and weight lifting. Any suggestions on a routine that you did at 4 mos out? And one that you enjoyed?

We have a stationary bike at home. Home is better for me since I am so busy. We also bought the resistance bands for the work out. So I have been riding the bike at a cardio pace for 30 minutes and then working out with the bands. It's working great.

Default Go for it

Hey there,
Personally, I would really push the cardio end of it if I were you. If you are really out of shape and want to tone up your upper body, a quick upper body workout twice a week is plenty. What you really want to do is burn off the fat/calories.

I started with 45 min a day of cardio and some days now. as I approach goal, I'll do two hours. Yea - really - you have to work your booty off. The main question is though, how hard are you working and how many calories are you burning?

If your goal is to lose weight, you do as much as you can, as long as you can as hard as you can. Now you have to know what you're willing to live with - if you work so hard you pass out, you won't do it again at all, so find your comfort level and start adding challenge to it each day.

Most of all, get out there, out of breath and sweaty, and you're doing something right!

Good luck!

Thanks. My goal actually is to stay toned as I lose weight. I know it will help in the weight loss, but that's not my main goal. I want to tone and build muscle in all those areas that could get flabby if I don't.

I think the weights are good as well...In the past I have always done good doing the weights as well.... I think I wuold go to a 3 day a week routine.... like a cicuit routine, where you do all the body parts.... There are so many different routines and opionions out there....

I do think it is wise to change up your areobic routines as well.. Walk one day , treadmill or elipitical the next.....

Also you have to start to increase the intensity... Make it harder, get a sweat going.... When you walk do 30 minutes at least.....

Right after my original surgery, bowel obstruction revision surgery, and pneumonia, I joined Gold's (2.5 months after my original surgery) and started doing aquafit classes a few nights a week....and walking on the treadmill for an hour on the nights I didn't do aquafit. I took it easy at first, given my lung capacity in the beginning, but I did it all the time for the first 6 months, and I felt great!!!! I had let my membership lapse, and slacked off for awhile, but I just re-joined, am doing aquafit and the treadmill/weights again and I just love it. I feel great!!! If you can find an aquafit class that's affordable, I highly recommend it!!!!

I do water aerobics and it is encredible. The water burns more calories and we use weights in our classes which help. I have made tons of friends and have worked into walking more and ridding stationary bike for 40 minutes. No soreness afterwards which is a plus. Good luck!

Good for you! Exercise is making a big difference in my journey and I know you will be glad you decided to "step it up"!

I do resistence training 3 times a week in the fantastic, fun, and challenging Body Pump classes at Gold's Gym (Body Pump and other Les Mills group fitness classes are offered at other gyms as well - you can Google "Body Pump" for the official Les Mills site, information on Body Pump and various other Les Mills classes, and class locations near you) - I started when I was not quite 4 months post-op and have been doing it for about 2 1/2, almost 3, months. I've gotten some of my co-workers to join me and now they're hooked, too. I love Body Pump and am seeing definite progress in my body and my capabilities!

I also do 3 days of cardio exercise at the gym, usually for an hour each, mixing up my routine - walking the treadmill one day, doing water aerobics another, etc. I went to my first Body Combat class (another Les Mills offering) at Gold's last week and it was killer, but exhilirating - I will definitely add that as one of my cardio activities and hope to someday be able to do the routines much better, 'cause I'm pretty clueless now!

Best wishes on your exercise-enhanced lifestyle, whatever you choose to do!

I recommend spinning! A good spinning class can burn about 750 calories per hour! It's tough, it hurts, and if anyone tells you they like to spin they are lying, but the results are incredible! I remember my first class I could only get through half of it. The trick is to sit down and keep peddling even if you're not doing the high intensity exercises, just keep moving. Now I can do almost an entire class. I used to be able to do the whole class, but I quit spinning for several months and I have to work back up. I went yesterday and had a great instructor, she pushed me to challenge myself, today I feel so good! I have such high energy, I'm peppy, and I'm ready to go again!!!
