Is anyone bike riding?
My friend wants to "train" for the MS-150 (150 mile bike ride for MS) next year, so she wants me to go bike riding with her a few times a week. However, I don't know if that is an approved exercise at 2 months post-op. I don't see my doctor for a few weeks, and don't want to call just for that. So, any bikers out there?

Anna:
I have an appt next wednesday and I plan on asking my dr if I can ride my bike and start golfing again. I am at least hoping for bike riding. I too want to ride in the MS 150 and really miss riding my bike. I will let you know what my dr says since we went to the same place.
When is your next appt?

Are you planning to do the one from Houston to Austin next year? I'll see him next month, but want to start riding this week. Guess what the nurse told me...don't do anything too strenuous

I am able to do a stationary bike. I really didn't understand why I can do that but not a normal bike. I would much rather do a normal bike..lol btw I am little over 1 month post op.

you are 2 months out from surgery. You should have zero restrictions at that point but, consult your doctor to be sure.
As far as riding you've got the queen of it already on this board(gina in NY). She has done multiple 50 mile rides and various other events.
She'd be a great resource for you in your journey. She knows alot. I myself really want to get out of running and into biking. Its much less impact and much more of a reasonable form on exercise long term(like the rest of my life).
So i'm hoping she helps me too.

I probably wont do the full MS 150 but I want to do the Tour De Braz ( it goes through Alvin down my street). Its a good starting point i figure. I dont think I can bike the whole way to Austin yet, that may be a couple of years down the road!! LOL

I'm seven weeks out and have no excercise restrictions from my doc. I've been riding my bike a lot! I do everything, all the machines at the gym and even weights.

At two months out I have no restrictions and I am a cyclist. I ride both a mountain bike and a road bike. It's good to mix up your excercise schedule. I usually walk one day and cycle the next. I'm riding about 10 miles a night and tonight was the first night that I increased my walking to 3 miles. I am a bit sore but feeling great.
Enjoy the ride.

Keep riding
Really - the way to get yourself up there is to start riding. Do a few miles, then each day, increase it. The big thing with the MS150 has less to do with strength than recovering fast, that is eating, resting and staying hydrated, really. I mean, you have to be able to knock out a 50 mile ride, rest over night and knock out another the next two days, but assuming you train for that and figure out how to eat, you'll be fine. I would just start slowly. You know, that abdominal surgery you may feel when you're off the saddle doing a major climb, but on flats youd be fine, I'm guessing. It is a cardio endurance sport - if you can push it out, push it out!!
