I am about to start a running program with a friend of mine and was wondering if anyone had any advice on good running shoes for heavier people with wide feet. I have been researching online but would love some feedback from you guys. Thanks!

I always pick shoes with strong arch support. Without it my feet would hurt me during walking/running. You can’t get things like that online; you need to try it on. Also if you run frequently you will need new shoes in 5-6 months.
Good luck! Tonya

nike shox. I normally got around 300miles outta them before a change was needed. Which wasn't bad considering I did the bulk of my running at 350lbs.

I don't know if you have a Road Runner Sports near you, but they scan your feet and watch you walk/run on a treadmill so they see exactly where you carry your weight and where your foot falls with each step. Then they give you recommendations for a brand of shoe and a set of insoles to fit your foot perfectly. The shoes cost about $120 and the insoles are about $15. Hope this helps. They also have a website that may be able to help.

New Balance makes some good shoes, in a lot of widths....I think they go all the way up to EEEEEE. They are numbered, and in general, the higher the number, the better the quality of the shoe. New Balance shoes are made on different lasts, and certain ones are for problem feet, and some are not. (Lots of info about this on their website.) If you can go to a GOOD shoe store (not the places in the mall where kids work), and get fitted, you're much more likely to find a good fitting, supportive shoe. I have a shoe store in my area that has a pedorthist (sp?) on staff, and they will actually watch the way you walk in the particular shoe, and make sure it's a proper shoe, and proper fit for your foot type.

Get fitted! It is the best way to run in comfort and prevent injury. Be willing to spend a little more on these shoes as your running shoes are your main protection from injury.
Go to a running specific store (Road Runner is great, but I don't think you have one near you) and have them fit you based on your running style, weight and shoe size. Most general sports stores do not have qualified people to get you fitted into the right shoe. As a 4E shoe wearer myself, stay away from Nike - they only make a couple of wide shoes and they aren't supportive enough. I personally have always liked New Balance or Asics, but that is a personal preference. New Balance makes great wide shoes - I personally use the 1223's because the extensive cushioning and distance training focus. Good luck!
