I'm considering training for a couple of marathons later this year with the hopes that I can run fast enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon next year (need to run sub 3 hours 15 minutes in one of the qualifying marathons to qualify at my age - 7:45 minute miles). I'm able to run a 5k at 7:45 average now so I'm thinking that after 6 months of training with a team, I may be able to do it!
I wanted to know if anyone has completed a marathon post surgery? Also, if anyone can tell me how the surgery effects your glycogen levels, taking gels and other nutrition during long runs and any other advice, I would greatly appreciate it. FYI - I seem to be able to use GU with all the positive effects and little to no apparent negative effects of dumping 100 calaries of sugur down your throat while running (no dumping or complete loss of energy).

If you can click off 3.2 miles averaging a 7minute mile you are there on speed. Marathons are about endurance and consistancy. I would suggest starting to increase your runs with a trainer. Thats what I did. He also suggested two weeks prior you tape way off. The week of the run you are only supposed to do a 1 mile breakin a day at most. Atleast thats what he says. Its called a downcycle and aparently alot of runners who are doing their first marathons do them. After awhile I guess your body just adapts and gets used to it and you don't need it as much. I know people who do a marathon a week if you can believe that crap. best of luck to you. The posts in this section keep getting more and more ambitous and I loooooooooooooooove that. You rock.

thanks for the advice. I'm actually attending a summer/fall team in training kick off meeting next monday - can't beat getting great training and raising money for leukemia and lymphoma society at the same time.
In preperation for the la jolla half this weekend, i've switched to speed training the last few weeks and very short runs. Duckie - GU is a small packet of gel that is mostly sugar, electrolytes, caffiene and vitamins that people in endurance sports use to keep their body going. You are supposed to take it about every 40 minutes during long runs or activity. Becuase it is mostly sugar, I was very worried that my body wouldn't accept it and shut down during my runs. Must be really fun watching the Boston - hopefully i'll participate in it next year!

I too found I can tolerte all sorts of disgusting packs of goo while cycling. The same stuff would actually hit me very differently if I just had some like, when I woke up in the moring, but after 20-30 miles on the bike, it works perfectly - my body is so hungry for it by then. You know all about the hydration too, I'm sure, so you should be good to go.
You run Sooooo much faster than I do, I am totally impressed. I was proud when I did a couple miles at 8:50! Guess I have a new standard to try to match! I am doing a duathlon this sunday, but it is tiny; 2 mile run, 14 mile ride, 2 mile run. No biggie there. But for a good cause so off we go! Good luck to you and keep up the phenomenal work!!!!!!!

gina,
Hope your duathlon went well. I actually like the GU and it was extremely helpful during the half marathon. The heat and the hills were brutal! I actually had to walk a little bit of "the hill" (400 ft incline in a little over 1/2 mile). All in all, my time of 2:08:20 wasn't that bad considering the conditions. If I didn't have the three packs of GU and kept pouring water over my head, I think I would have wilted on the course. There were a lot of ambulances aiding runners from heat exhaustion and other ailments. Thanks for your support!
