Default Is your neighborhood walkable ?

When I was "dieting" a couple of years ago, an avid runner I knew told me about a website that you can map out an area and know how many miles it is. After you plan it , you can print in out.

I am lucky I live in an area that has lots of walkable streets. So if walking is your thing. The website is: USA Track & Field, then click on the USA map "routes" and plan away.

I couldn't find the right thing to click. In the past I have driven around and used my odometer, but it makes it hard to vary your route.

This was soooo cool!

I'm teaching a workshop this summer on Web 2.0 Tools for teachers--I'm going to show them this!

Thanks a bunch!

Default Also iPOD Nano w/ Nike +

Thought I would add another few great tools for walking/running and mapping where you have been.

The Nike + website allows you to map your walks/runs and keep track of your statistics if you have an iPod Nano and the Nike + attachment. you don't have to have nike + shoes as you can attach the little pedometer chip to the top of your shoe with a shoe wallet or other specialized attachments. This is cool becuase it adds some good motivation to your walk/runs because you can set goals to achieve on the nike + website. The Nike + is not as accurate on hills and I've had some technical problems where it lost my runs before I could download them.

Also, if you really get into it, the Garmen Forunner 305 is an incredible tool that keeps your heart rate, pace and a bunch of other things while you are run/walking. When you get home, you can attach it to your computer and it will map your run out and give you a bunch of stats. There is an internet site that works with the Forunner that uses a very detailed map and allows you to compare similar run/walks to see how your performance compared between the two.

These have both been great tools for me as I prepare for a half-marathon later next month.

hope that helps!
