Default help for bad knees

I have recently had surgery on both knees. I am really out of shape and need to get into a program that will strengthen muscle and lose weight and not be too harsh on the knees. Should I find a personal trainer? How does one go about this and get a qualified person? I feel like I need direction from a professional at least in the beginning. I live in San Diego Ca.My surgeon is Dr Callory. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Chuck... Did your doctor recommend physical therapy after the surgery(ies)? The therapist could/should give you advise in that dept. I had a cortisone shot in one knee in Dec for a torn meniscus... It still feels good == but surgery is inevitable. I'm leery of what I should and should NOT be doing as well... so I'm looking forward to the advise that hopefully will show up here.

I'll be watching this thread!

What type of surgery did you have Chuck?

I already have had one knee replacement and am working on the other. I need to lose alot of weight before they will do the other one.

Maybe just to start with until you can strengthen your knees why don't you try water aerobics or you can walk in water that is waist high for at least 30 minutes every day. Doctor had me do that to strengthen my leg muscles prior to the knee replacement. It did help.

Having knee pain is not fun.....................

You can find personal trainers at your local gym, which you'll need to join to do personal training in anyway. Also, the elliptical machine is low impact and works you pretty good, so start on the lowest setting. There are other machines that are low impact too, we have arc machines here that are pretty cool. Just start slowly and listen to your body.

I was wondering about the physical therapy too - if you had any, ask that person what you should be doing.

Good luck and congrats on trying to get in shape. Its a great thing!

I would recommend going to one of your gyms and ask them for a personal trainer. My daughater had one for only 3 sessions, but she got the technique and type of excersizing her body needed.

Have fun

I have had 7 knee surgeries (all laproscopic). After each one I got a personal trainer for 3-5 sessions and worked with them to get a routine down that would benefit my knees and not cause any harm. Just make sure you get a trainer that understands the surgery you had done, wrong exercises can do more harm than good.
