Default Latest hike

Hi Everyone,
My Husband, Gary and Monica Gilbert (Lap Rny 04/03/07 Dr. Burpee) joined me on the American Cancer Society’s 22nd Annual Climb to Conquer Cancer “Climb for The Cure”.

We started at the Pima Community College - West Campus (2202 W. Anklam Rd.), and walked 3 miles up to the top of Sentinel Peak, better known as “A” Mountain (for the “A” that is painted annually by University of Arizona students). The Paved road climbs just a few miles from the University of Arizona. The climbs average grade is 5.6% (rise over run) and climbs about 410 ft. The round trip hike was approx. 6 miles.

The morning was cool and We did some stretches and jumping jacks to warm up to start off our journey which was followed by the Ribbon cutting ceremony and off we went along with so many people varying in age from baby to elderly all sharing a common goal for a worthy cause

Monica made it to the top in about an hour, she said, “I know I could not have done this a year ago” we spent about 30 min. talking about how times have really changed for us. The hike actually took half the time it did for me pre-surgery. I didn’t even stop once to rest, I’m so proud of myself! I was surprised to see the “A” was painted green for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

On the trip down from the peak we took a walk on a trail that leads us to some beautiful scenery with the desert flowers in bloom. I wished I brought my camera to get a picture of Monica picking some flowers along the route. The completed hike only took 3 hours round trip. By 11:30 we were safely back where we started. Now I sit resting my poor muscles, but it hurts so good!

Great job on the hike and subsequently "beating" your previous time. And what an awesome "excuse" to exercise. Cancer prevention/research is such a needed area of monies needed.

Keep up the great work and keep the pictures coming!
