Clunk...Clunk...Clunk...
Hello All,
I have an unusual exercise situation and am wondering if anyone else ever had this. When I do crunches, something just under my sternum "clunks" out from under my sternum. When I lower myself, it "clunks" back under my sternum.
It does not hurt, but it is really uncomfortable. I can usually do about 10 crunches before it starts but once it starts it happens every time. I can't continue doing crunches once it starts because it is just too uncomfortable. It usually only happens when doing crunches, but sometimes this happens when I am sitting at my desk and lean forward to write something and back again.
My first thought was that it could be some scar tissue that pops up around my sternum when I do a crunch and then pops back when I lay back. My aerobics instructor said it could also be a hernia.
I have my six-month checkup coming at the beginning of December and I am going to ask the surgeon, but thought I would ask here to see if anyone else ever experienced anything like this.
Thanks!
-Mike-

Mike, I get a funny pressure pain/sensation when I bend forward too far... I'm thinking it is some scar tissue from my gall bladder surgery... I wouldn't describe it as "clunk-clunk-clunk" --- but it is uncomfortable and subsides if I straighten up and wait a little bit. I can almost picture something being "folded over" and pinched inside of me... I'll be interested in hearing what your doctor thinks it is - and if mine is the same sort of problem...

Never expeirenced anything like you are describing. I wouldn't tempt fate and get it checked out before you continue.
Besides there are plenty of other exercises out there for you to do that build a solid core.

I'm going with a hernia on this one. I had two of them. I had them fixed when I had my open RNY. I'd definitley mention this to your dr and have it checked out. After having any type of abdominal surgery you muscles on your tummy are weakend and put you at a higher risk of a hernia.

Mike,
I had a sensation that felt almost like what you are describing. It would happen at the oddest times. But it felt like something would get stuck inside right behind my rib cage. It would kind of clunk back into place..I always thought it was where the pouch was attached behind diaphram. Since reversal I have NOT had it happen. So I'm curious what you find out. Take care and love the scuba dive pic. Janie

I too have the "sound" "feeling" as you described. When I am transitioning from upright to laying flat. Also, mine is uncomfortable but not painful.
It feels like something gets caught under a lip of some sorts.
My pouch has been examined , scoped and poked and nada..except a very small stoma..hence my solids non tolerance...but nada on the "clunk" asked Dr about it..he didn't know but he did check for abnormalities during my GES & EDG and other tests ...all was pink and cute...
Curious to what you find out...
Be careful until then with the crunches...I am sure John can tell you some other core exercises to do.
Take Care~

I have not a clue, but it doesn't sound good....so be careful!! Find other exercises to do until you find out what that is.
