Cool Being Proactive!

I'm still off from work, so I rode around town looking at a couple of different gyms that were having sign up specials. I found one that was brand new, looked awesome inside, and was only $20 a month, so, I JOINED!

The doctor hasn't yet released me to exercise, but I figured I could go in and walk on the treadmill, as I'm walking around anyway. I don't yet know what else I can do, but I called the doctor and left message. Hopefully someone will call me back and tell me what else is safe for the moment. My appointment to be released to exercise is not until November 20th, but I think I did a good thing today and I'm pretty proud of myself.

Very creative way to spend your time off... touring gyms! AWESOME! Do they have childcare? : ) Take the little one with you and let her have some play time...

Do they have tv monitors/headphone jacks on the treadmills? Good way to pass the time while you're walking...

Proud of you Mike! Keep up the positives!!!

Good for you! That's awesome. And $20 a month is an amazing price. I've never heard of any gym being such a great deal before. Well, my gym membership is only $25 a month, but only because I joined on my mom's family account and she is a senior citizen so gets cheaper deals. I've already gone back to the gym a few times, too. I do treadmill or the recumbent bikes -- both very low impact. Just be careful and listen to your body -- I ignored signs that I was pushing things too hard and pulled the healing muscles on my left side. Frustrating! But I'm sure you'll be smarter than me!

Janine,

So far, so good. I'm a little achy today, but my wife and I put out some of our Halloween decorations yesterday and since I'm not supposed to lift anything, I kicked the Rubbermaid tubs back to the shed. The backs of my legs are killing me! (I see a LorTab in my future this evening...)

I'm eating regular food at this point, but only for one or two meals, and even then just tiny bits and really just meats only. I haven't had a veggie or any sort of carb in weeks! (I'm not really craving them though.) I bought some shrimp for dinner tonight. In the past, I would have eaten the whole bag. Now, that bag will probably last me all week! My other meals are either protein bars or protein shakes. The protein shakes aren't tasting that great, but I choke them down in order to get all of my protein in.

I've still got another week and a half off from work. I'm a little stir crazy, but otherwise feeling much much better.

Hope you're doing well!

-Mike

Hi Katie,

They DO have a daycare! My wife's gym does too. (But she goes to a women's only gym, so I couldn't go there. That's okay though, because the one I joined is much closer!) The daycare is only a couple bucks an hour, so Lily can go with either one of us. (My wife's has a daycare too.)

Also, they DID have TV's on the treadmills. I was blown away by that, I've never seen that before. AND I can tune to a channel and watch her on the video camera that they have in the daycare area.

I think I'm going on Wednesday for the first time and just walk on the treadmill for a while.

-Mike

Default After major surgery...

Mike,

After major surgery, my advice to my clients was to stay off powered machinery for 3-4 weeks - in other words, you want it to be self-powered at this stage... ellipticals are great as tolerated, recumbent bikes are great as tolerated, walking under your own power is great, but I'd give the treadmills a little bit longer.

The point is, if you stop on a treadmill, the treadmill keeps going. If you stop on an elliptical or the bike because they're under your power, it's not a problem. You just don't want something that can tweak your newly healed stitches for a while. I've seen people who walk and run on treadmills and have for years take one wrong step and have to scramble... and had one very experienced gal take all the skin off her face because she got distracted for a second, and took a bad step...fell on her face on the tread.

NO lifting over ten pounds, which you obviously know. It takes six weeks for those inner stitches to heal, so pay attention...
