I have my bypass surgery Nov 12. 07... i keep seeing these pics and hearing about people needing tummy tucks and breast implants.. and as much as that scares me to death to lose my boobs... it isnt going to keep me from doing this.

As soon as I am medically cleared after surgery I will work out once again.

Anyone know of some good AT-HOME dvds or even equipment that isnt too expensive? I don't want to have to go through PS at age 23 !!! That is just crazy. I am actually , after surgery, planning on getting a personal trainer and joining a gym.. i think it will be totally worth it.. just right now researching p/t at gyms and seeing if they have any background in dealing with WLS patients.

Thanks guys.. and keep it up.. you all look amazing!!!!!

Wow, John...You've really been through alot, too, in your life...WAY TO GO!!!...I'm impressed and inspired...I am still riding my recumbent bike every morning, usually 45 minutes per day, as soon as I get up, so there's no excuse not to do it....My goal is to tone up, mostly abd. muscles, and lose alot more weight...My current mini-goal is to find some other exercises to do, too, at home....Maybe exercise DVDs???...Any recommendations...I'm getting a little "bored" w/the biking every morning and need to cross-train, or alternate, to spice it up...I'm about 7 weeks post-op...And I also lift hand weights and ankle weights at home...At this time, can't afford a gym membership, but am working on this/checking on it...I have tried some "kickboxing" DVD and that really kicked my butt, not to mention my right knee replacement...Anyone else w/ideas, I'm open...You guys are all so inspiring...Thank goodness we have each other here for motivation and to just "be there."...

i actually think im going to invest in a bike... or get up an hour earlier than i normally would ( eek that 530am) .. and go for a walk around my development... it seems that with the winter months eventually making their way here.. biking in the winter would not be the best of ideas.

Also, when did everyone start working out again after their WLS? I'm hearing six weeks.. and i want to start before that.. maybe with the tae-bo videos at home.

I am Sharon

I am 5"6 and 235 pounds. I have no problem working out at all. I have been known to over do it at times. I love turbo jam and billy Blanks. I have the work out dvd's that I do daily. I sweat like it's raining in my living room. I also do fit tv and love Gilard's work out. The problem is I gain weight out of no where. It's causing my right side to have pain. From the hips down to my knees. I am hoping to get this done and get to my work out and stay at a steady weight. I have gained 86 pounds this summer. I walked so much and worked out it's crazy. I will see the thyroid doctor Thursday. I take blood tomorrow so I hope one of the 2 helps.

I do three work outs on fit tv. The step, then gilard's workout, and the yoga,I normally do them all back to back

When I do the turbo jam I work out 45 minutes in the am and 45 in the early evening. I lose the weight very fast. Then gain it back even faster.

Default Question

Hey John,

I can't afford a personal trainer, so I'm going to ask you or others this question.. to see what I can do to build my body back up after 2.5 yrs of major complications and no energy and no exercise. I have walked after surgery (reversal) but I don't do anything on a daily basis. I want too.. but I don't know if I'm eating enough yet to function a work out. I still get light headed sometimes from lack of food. I'm still on liquid protein smoothies, and probably 1/2 of my food in liquids. How much protein should I eat a day, and what can I do to start to build my body back up from being seriously run down? Should I just start to walk every day, and then integrate weights after? Do I just do weight training? Thanks Janie

Default Work out with fun

I have yet to have the surgery but when I graduated high schol I weighed 365 lbs. I am currently at 201. I am planning to have the RNY as soon as i can get in for a psych eval.

Nonetheless, I lost the first 165 by fluke. I was angry at always being ill. I was angry that I had a family that was slowly being killed off by diabetes and heart disease. I was angry that I did not know up from down and hated going to the gym since I was fat.

I started doing things I liked. I was selish and wanted to go to the beach as I love the ocean. So I went. I started paddlling in the water when I thought, I can swim let go!. I looked online and found out that the average peir is 1/2 a mile. If i could work up to making it there and back it would be like swimming a mile.

It did not happen overnight. In fact, It was hell at first but a fun hell. I convinced my sister's boyfriend to go with me since he too loved the water but did not have the chance to go with my sister who is currently weighing as much as I was then. She can not walk on the sand, she can not swim, she can not even handle her own weight since she is not very tall and it has placed pressure in excess on her already bad knee.

He went with me and within a few months we were swimming peirs all over the coast of california. We then added the new things challenge. Since my sister will not go anywhere and I was starting to lose weight I figured I missed doing a lot of things in my life that i always wanted to try. I started going to the national parks and walking trails, I started taking on new challenges such as walking to the store instead of driving or gong to art museums (large museums are a greak place to walk for hours.)

I lost a significant amount o weight by living. I decided to focus on the things that I had never had before. Could you believe that as of the age 23 I had never had samon or halibit or any fish that was not frozen for that matter? I love these things now.

Unfortunately, I now have diabetes and am still 201 lbs which I have not been able to loose. I have a great surgeon that supports me in having the surgery and hopefully will lose even more.

Just thought maybe someone who is discouraged like I was could find some hope in these little things.

Honestly take things slowly first and foremost. You can crush your body and it will build it back if you are eating right but, since you arne't its hard to know how hard to push. I'd say try and get 1gram of protein in per lb of weight should be your ultimate goal. For now if you can atleast get half of that its better than nothing and a start.

I know solids for you are real hard so smoothies will prolly be the place you get your protein in. Can you drink smoothies? There is a smoothy place close by where i live thats all about health. You tell them what you need and they make it. I literally used to drink smoothies that had 70-80 grams of protein in them. Its not cheep but, if you are having trouble eating solids this is what I would recomend.

When you can go back to eating. Chicken...seriously lots and lots of chicken. Very very low in fat and very high in protein and can be made/cooked a 1,000 different ways(i know i've tried all of em' lol). As far as getting your strength back don't worry about picking up additional weights for now. Just use your body weight. It weighs plenty and if you are do it right will be more than enough to build back tons and tons of strength.

You need to be doing things like situps/pushups/pullups if possible. You need to be walking everywhere and as much as humanily possible. If you can set aside two hours at some strange time of the morning or night its perfect. Walking at night will give you more energy and stamina not having to deal with the hot sun or humidity in the air.

Also yoga and stretch classes are FANTASTIC for building up full body strength. Holding yourself in those positions for certain mounts of time using your body weight against you will not only increase your muscle but, give you flexability which will greatly help later on when you are trying to work your body much much harder.

I hope these tips helped some. The biggest one I could give would be to hire a real good trainer who understands your situation and will work with you on developing low low weight/resistance workouts to build up stamina and strength.

WOW what a fantastic story and post. Thankyou so much for doing it. Someone like you will do wonders with the surgery. Fish is one of cornerstones of my diet. I love it. Great in protein and low in fat. They are great. Swimming is a intense workout and great cause of the low impact on your body. Its basically all heart rate and resistance against your body. It does wonders for you cardiovasular system and upper body. I wish you all the best on your journey but, someone like you prolly won't need it.

Thanks so much for taking a moment to post that. I enjoyed reading it.
