I had a personal trainer for about 4 months last year. Wow, did I ever feel the burn in my muscles from it. They really know how to find muscles you never knew existed.
But let the trainer know of any bad pain/discomfort you have that lasts more than 24-48 hours (some pain/discomfort is normal). They need to know this so they can alter your workout accordingly. Sometimes they like to push the envelope in the beginning to see what your body can take. But don't worry, they know what they are doing. Also don't forget to tell them when you are getting no pain/discomfort, may mean they have backed off some muscles too much and you are not getting a full workout you deserve.
Have fun!

I'm going back tonight for more torture. I will definitely mention the pain. I went last Wednesday and was pretty much hurting until Saturday. Sunday I was sort but it was bearable. Last Thursday and Friday, I could barely walk up and down stairs which is not acceptable for work. I have to go up stairs at work on a regular basis because all our old files are stored upstairs. I also have to life boxes of files which I couldn't do without really using my back instead of my legs. What he had me doing with my legs was just squats down to a bench, no weights, and squeezing an exercise ball. There was no weight or resistence to back off on. He gave me a good workout on my back and arms and although I felt it for two days, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as my legs! I guess I'll find out tonight what he'll do. Not sure how much longer I can see him, though. At the gym, you get a free consult and he's giving me a second free visit. After this, I'm sure I'll have to pay and I'm broke, so there will be no more personal trainer for me! I'll probably be posting more tomorrow when I'm dying again!

Trainers are not cheap sadly, mine cost around $3500. Luckily the gym had a payment plan that I could pay $350 per month for 10-12 months. That was a bit easier on the wallet. (Edit - forgot to add that the 3500 was for 72 sessions or 4 months, whichever came first)
But the free sessions they give you are great, it gives you an idea of what you should do for a work out while there. And if you can go with a friend it helps having there to keep you on track so you don't "cheat".
Some gyms also have 2-3 visits with a trainer at a reduced rate. That way every so often they can put you back on track if you deviate from it, and can give you new excercises for your changing body. Helps with money this way as well.
Good luck!

Well, hubby and I signed up for the long haul last night! We're doing 1 visit per week for 12 months as that's all we can afford. It is $120/month which I thought was a little high, but when I've seen other people say what they're paying, maybe it's not that high. Of course, they had plans that were all the way from $160 to $500/month, mine is $120 because I get a student discount. I knew getting a student ID for that online program I'm working on would do me some good eventually! The $500/month plan let you meet with a trainer like five days per week. Anyway, it sounds like some of ya'll pay way more! Guess I'm glad I live in North Carolina! There really wasn't too much of a workout yesterday, he was working with hubby more because it was his first time working with a trainer. We're going to be working together sharing a trainer so he needed to orientation. We're going back on Friday to complete all the paperwork and have our first real session. Hopefully, this doesn't kill me! of him, for that matter.

Did you talk to him at all about how EXTREMELY sore you were after your last session with him???
How much time does he actually spend with you for 120/month? I had no idea how expensive trainers were/are!!!

$120/month gets me one session per week. The trainers are really flexible, though. If you're there and need to ask a question, as long as they're not working with someone else they will always help.
I did ask about how sore I was, he said it was perfectly normal especially with the legs. He said that technically, we did more with the arms and back and he would have thought my triceps would have been the most sore. With the squats I am doing, it's working muscle groups that you don't work on machines. He calls it "real life" weight training. Basically, with the squats I'm just strengthening the muscles that I use every day when I stand up and sit down. When I honestly think about how I stand up and sit down, I know I don't do it property. I plop when I sit, my mom has been telling me that for years! Yesterday, I didn't have anywhere near the pain I had last week. One think I did different yesterday, though, was going in the pool and hot tub afterwards. Tonight, I did my arms, back, and abs and a few squats. I'll see in the morning how I feel, but I think I'm really going to be feeling it in my back. It is good, however, because when you break down that muscle, you are burning calories while it is healing. I think he said something like that when you build one pound of muscle, that pound of muscle will burn calories for 72 hours. I'm not very scientific so I'm probably not saying this right, but everything he told me and DH makes sense. I hope it works!
