Default Sneakers

I'm wondering if it's worth buying new sneakers. I have ok sneakers but they are OLD and I'm noticing that my knees are getting sore and everything. I don't want to spend a ton of money on shoes that I'm going to not be able to wear for very long if I lose weight out of them. Walking isn't usually my biggest source of exercise. I'm much more likely to swim but right now I've been doing walking because it's close and easy to do. Any thoughts?

If you're going to do any amount of walking, it is a good investment in your health to wear proper shoes. Maybe try some insole inserts or something to make these last until your feet shrink, yet give you more impact absorbtion when you walk.

Lynda great advice....I am 7.5 weeks out and walk everyday and I still wear my old shoes. If you can get away with it try the inserts...if not you will still probally get you money's worth.

good luck

I can't emphasize enough what good footwear means to your feet, knees, hips and back. I'm the type that used to pick up the $7.99 ones at WalMart. Well, I've developed bursitis in one hip, the knees were really aching- and this was before surgery! Early this spring I went on line to zappos.com, bought 2 new pairs of sneakers on the advice of my dr. What a difference! Well, yes, I've lost 70 lbs, but I have happy feet! The knees appreciate them too. I don't see much of a difference in the hips, to be honest. I paid approx $45-50 for each pair, but well worth it. Plus, it helped my self-esteem venturing into a gym the first time that my sneakers didn't look like I had been gardening in them!
Oh- 70 lbs has not made much of a difference on shoe size yet.

Bonus- zappos, com has free returns! I love them, and no, I don't get a commission. Lots of sizes- I have extra wide. Got dress shoes and sandals too, I have walking boots for colder weather. Propet is one brand I recommend.

Dont laugh at me... but the most comfortable shoes I have found for working out and walking... are... Crocs! They dont give ankle support if you need that tho. My biggest issue is my Knees & Back.. and I have NO issues wearing these.

I have several pairs of crocs (who doesn't?) but have never tried walking in them. I was walking in my Tevas last week but maybe I"ll try the crocs this week and see if they make any difference.

Default Still wearing New Balance

If you have trouble with your feet, New Balance are some of the best athletic shoes going. The key is whether the shoe flexes at the arch. If it does, you will aggravate problems like plantar fasciitis and bone spurs (I have both). New Balance is one of the few athletic shoes that has a steel shank underlying the arch support, thus no bend in the middle, thus much lessened pain, particularly when you're heavy.

I've been really lucky and have very few problems with joint or knee pain and I don't have any problems with my feet. I just really hate to buy sneakers and have them not fit in 4 months or whenever my feet start to shrink from weight loss. I'm going to try my crocs and see how those work out for me and also start back to swimming soon too so that the sneaker thing isn't an issue anyway.
