1) If you aren't already, make sure you switch to going backwards every five to seven minutes, and go backward for at least two minutes before switching again. I listen to music while I'm "running" on the elliptical, and I just switch every song.

2) Change your upper body posture, as well, lean forward, lean back.

3) "Run" on your toes for a while, then switch back.

4) "Run" flat-footed, but lift the heel of the leg that's uppermost on each stride for a while, so you're stretching the arch and ball of the foot. Sounds funny, but easy to do. I just basically use it as kind of a dance step to whatever music I'm doing.
I got my elliptical about 6 weeks ago, and have worked up to a 40 minute workout. The treadmill was too rough on my knees and I just wasn't pushing myself hard enough on videos. But I too, have the balls of my feet go numb about half way thru my work out. I thought it was my shoes, so I went out and got new ones, but its still happening. I will try your suggestions tonight when I workout and see what happens.

Since I got my elliptical I have gone from working out once or twice a week, to working out 5-6 days a week. When I first got on it I could only do 7 minutes and in 6 weeks I have worked my way up to a 40 minute workout where I'm actually pushing myself. Its probably the greatest investment in myhealth that I've made since surgery.

I actually have been switching and going backwards already... works out the back sides of my butt if I focus and tighten when I do it I wanna have a nice looking tush in those skinny jeans someday

Thank you so much for the idea of switching back and forth at ever song... I have just been a clock watcher, but the music sounds much more fun!

I wanted to get the precor, but they were just to much money and I just couldn't afford it right now. Maybe if I wear this one out I can get one of those in the future

I got mine last week and I love it. If anyone here is looking for one but needs space.. I found one that folds up and it is so easy to do. Its on rollers so you can grab the handle pull it where you want and then fold it up and slide it back. I love it! http://www.proform.com/webapp/wcs/st...29318_-1_21664

I am learning to love the eliptical...after a dry spell on excesizing, I have gone back and it feels really good.

I think my issues with chronic anemia have been reduced since having an iron infusion. I used to jack my heart rate on level 1 with in 5 minutes up to 170...target for my age is 140 (anemia causes oxygen deprivation)...so this last week, I worked out 4 times and never got my heart rate above 140!!!

Feels good, although every muscle aches especially in my pecks and my gluts...ouch!!!

Its awesome you are working out but, you're max heart rate isint 140. There's a ton of mis information about there. I just plugged in a guess of 40 years of age(I wanted to be on the safe side) and female with a resting heart rate of 60(realiity of which is prolly lower) here are the results.

Age 40
Resting HR-60
Maximum HR-181
Easy(60-75%)-128-148
AT(85-90%) -161-167
VO2 Max(90-100%)-167-181

Easy is if you are nursing a injury. AT is ideally where you need to try and average for a great cardio workout. VO2 MAX is the absolute highest you wanna hit i.e that being 181BPM.

I'm not trying to be hard on you...but, the fat burning zone is bs and age drastically changing you're cardio heart rate target zones is bs as well. Age only affects the numbers 5-7BPM and thats over the course of you're entire lifetime from age 20 to 70. Bottem line is a 170 heart rate for a 30 something or 40 something women is completely fine in a cardio workout. The reason why most gym's and even others in the industry would deter you from getting true cardio workout is they are scared of the liablity. Its more about them than it is you.

Hence the fat burning zone bs that got invented in the 1980's.

Thanks for the info...I beleive I was safe in that heart rate it was just so high so fast and going higher. My hematologist concerned because in a person with iron defiency the oxygen is limited in the blood cells so the heart has to work really hard to get enough so while my heart rate was up I was not burning fat because of it I was just fighting for oxygen...this is why I am really glad I can work out again....you are right in saying I need to bring the heart rate up more now though because 20 minutes at 130 is not a dfat burning work out but I did not want to reinact the ambulance ride I had last month when I passed out at a museum.

I am hoping to get up to 145- 150 in the near future...thanks for the push...I need it!!

Yeah if you are having iron issues(as a couple of women I know are) then you need to make sure you get it. That can be a problem and a serious one. I would hope you are on a supplement and that should counteract that problem.

Unfortunately just 30ish minutes at a 130 is never going to be enough to really make a difference. It sucks that it works that way but, its true. None the less its awesome that you are on the machine on a constant basis and especially given you are trying to work around some other problems.

I applaud the effort. The elip is a great machine that I firmly believe in especially if you are drastically overweight or nursing injuries. Virtually no impact and it can really get you're heart rate up where you need it.

you should look into becoming a personal trainer...your passion for excesize is really great!

I have had trainers before and it really made a difference how much further I would push myself.

The iron issues has been ongoing, even prior to GBS, but got really bad after. I am starting to get IV infusions and I think its going to work. Been through the supplementation and even whole blood transfusion.

Trying to optomistic but it does bum out my work out routine.

Glad your doing so well...lucky guy!!

Congrats on your eliptical!

I got this one a while back and love it! We keep it in the living room since it's big and it directly faces the tv and sits right under the A/C vent

http://www.nordictrack.com/webapp/wc...27451_-1_19053

I can do a half hour if I take a few short breaks in the middle. I'm sure I can go longer, just working up to it. I just did 20 minutes, I think I'm going to try 20 more min. now.
