Question Is 30 minutes enough?

>Ok, I've joined a gym, Lady of America. Anyhow, I'm going in and working out for just about 30 minutes. I do upper body on M,W,F, lower body on T,Th. Next week I'll reverse that. I'm giving myself off from the gym on weekends, but will walk instead. Am I doing enough to help? As I said in my Personal thread, it's 100% more than what I ever did before surgery. I'm also thinking of signing up for some more personal timer with the trainer who gave me my "introductory" sessions. (I think it's a good use of some of my refund money, don't you?)
>So, some of you people are waaaaaay crazier than me and have taken to exercise like a duck to water. Am I on the right track? (My trainer suggested an hour, I think I remember, but endurance-wise and time-wise, I don't think I can do it right now.)

Yes any exercise is better than none but, you do need to push yourself. No one on this board is going to know whats enough for you're personal body and situation. You have to be the one to decide if you think you can push harder or not.

Thats why a personal trianer working there beside you is so important and can really help. No one here will really know.

Alot of times people can do alot more than they think if they would just push themselves. So be you're own judge but, be fair...and defenetly seek the advice or a personal trainer.

In my opinion, your 30 minute workout is just fine for you at this stage in your progress - the key is to exercise consistently - dont over due it in the beginning - you can add to your program as you become more fit. Many people start out hot and heavy and burn out after a few weeks - just concentrate on working yourself into condition at a reasonable pace and you might find you will be able to maintain your exercise program for the long run. It also helps to add variety to your exercise activities so that it doent become boring - e.g. take a class, take up a sport, go for long brisk walks, etc.

good luck!

It sounds great. The ONLY thing I would add, if you're crunched for time, is a 5 minute warm up on any sort of cardio machine. It will get you buring calories and your resistance work will burn more after a little warm up.

I think it is safe to say that I am one of the major gym dogs here, and I only do an hour a day, so just work your way up to that when or if want to. And I think doing it 5 days in a row is everything - it has to be a part of your life and you're doing it right.

You are doing great!!

Default Here's the deal

Here's what I tell my clients - exercise has to fit into your life, or you won't do it. If an hour doesn't fit into your life, and a half hour does, and you will consistently go, then stop feeling guilty and do your half hour. And yes, I too would suggest you talk to the personal trainer, in order to get the most out of the time you do spend at the gym.

In addition, start changing the way you think about the rest of your life--get away from speed, move toward fitness. Instead of finding the closest parking space at the mall, take the furthest one away. If the office you work in is only two or four or five floors up, then take the stairs rather than the elevator. If the snatch-n-grab store where you get your coffee, newspaper or lottery tickets (whatever floats your boat ) is within walking distance, walk there and back instead of driving the car on Saturday morning.

Do you see what I mean? Take a look at your everyday life, and add walking, stairclimbing, and general effort into all the parts of the day that you can. Get a pedometer (they're like 8 or 10 bucks, tops). Set as a beginning minimum goal that you get to 10,000 steps a day. Each month, add another 500 steps to that. Check your pedometer just before dinner each evening--if you haven't quite made it, then go for a walk before or after dinner! Even if you take every one of these suggestions, you're adding at most a half hour of general exercise to your day, and you're keeping your metabolism burning throughout the day. Then you can use your targeted exercise at the gym to build muscle and/or get your heart rate up and keep it there in heart-healthy, fat-burning blocks of time.

Proud of you for going to the gym! And a point of advice--asking gym rats (yes, John and Gina, this means you! ) whether you're spending enough time at the gym is like asking a nudist whether you should wear clothes... LOL...

Yes everyone needs to start somewhere. Pace yourself and workup from there is what I say. People sometimes think I came outta surgery and hit the treadmil the next day doing 3 mile sets. lol.

I had to work my way up the ladder just like everyone else. The key is to re-evaulate yourself once a month and increase where you think you can and change/modify you're program to suit you're new needs. Hardly anyone does this. They workout the same every week and never change or incease anything. Part of the reason they have so much trouble loosing.

You have to constantly be pushing yourself towards you're next goal. Unless ofcourse you aren't a wants results now kinda person. I'm the type person once I decide something...I want it to happen yesterday. So since I know that I workout accordingly. I know I wouldn't be happy with only loosing 5lbs or a month...or god for bid some of these stories where people go for months and months without loosing a lb or a inch anywhere.

I need results. So I go and get them.
