Smile Hope springs eternal

So I moped for one day. Now to get on with it (as you all assured me I would). Wednesday I'm going for a massage/acupuncture session with our area's best body worker. Thursday, the orthopedist and next weekend I am starting with a new trainer at my gym. He is the one that helped me with a new exercise regime to help stregthen my hips (as per physical therapist instructions.) Jamal is a former running coach and says that he can get me there - even if it takes longer than I want it to. I believe him - he is amazing.

Today I burned over 700 calories on the eliptical in an hour. Kept my heart rate around 145 - it felt good. Didn't hurt at all - it is just running that does it to me. Go figure.

I believe that someone will figure this out for me and will know how to fix it. I am sure it has something to do with the weight loss - or maybe it is as simple as the fact that I never ran before the weight loss. Maybe I need to spend a year strengthening my hips, not a month, before I start running again. Maybe it is the darn panni messing me up? Who knows, but it is just a matter of time.

Thanks again all of you for understanding. And John, you are as ever - my rock of sweetness.

Default Holy smoke!

You do sound ready for a triathalon! Can I ask how long you've been exercising? Were you pretty active before? I just started a gym this week, and, well, talk about a strange new world...

I can't do a triathalon until I can run!

I've been working out since a few months before surgery. I had to lose 10% before my surgeon would even talk to me, so I ended up getting pretty hot and heavy into the gym. There was just no other way to do it.

I did nautilus in college and martial arts then and for a few years after as well, but I wouldn't say I ever had an "active" life-style. I started yoga a year before my daughter was born (she's now 3 1/2) but stopped when the morning sickness set in. So I've always been trying to be active, but there have been years when I did nothing. This is certainly the first time I've worked out with this type of dedication. I go every day I can (unless kids are sick, husband is out of town or whatever) so it works out to 6 days a week usually. I've been at it for 10 months now.

I love my gym. I feel so supported there - so accepted and I always have. I never would have made it without them!

If anyone can make something positive come out of this.. YOU can. I have no doubt! It really stinks that running is out right now.. but hey.. 700 on an elliptical.. WOOT.. awesome!

The reason the eliptical doesn't hurt is because it's designed to work your muscles without putting undo stress on your joints etc.

Not trying to put the 'bad mouth' on your plans for running .. but you know ... running is not very good for you. It puts way too much stress on their joints and by the time they get into their 40s and 50s, runners start having problems.

There's a lot of literature out about this.

I go to the park almost everyday - with the runners, the bikers, the skaters etc... and I do speed walking.

MUCH less stress on your joints and the posture forces you to hold your abs in, to pump your arms (toning them) and twist at your waist and hips (slimming and toning). Usually I go five days a week for about 45 minutes and yes, you will work up a sweat.

Give it a shot!

Actually - my injury is not joint related - it is a muscle in my lower back.

Speed walking - I don't think my ego could handle that. Also, I have people who want to run with me (they're all over 45) and they just take it easy. There is a lot to the social aspect - these are my new, active friends. I think if you just run a few times a week - we're not talking competitively here - it can be wonderful. It sure as heck feels good - that is my main motivation - it just feels sooooo good to me. Like I've been tied down my whole life and I'm free for those minutes for the first time ever.

My surgeon is a runner too - there is something poetic about this process because of that, I think.

If something else happens though, and I have another major set-back, I may have to read the writing on the wall and let it go. We'll see...

yeah elipitical is awesome for slow weeks and taking it easy on you're body while still needing a good workout. lord knows i've used it during those times. Glad to see you are still getting you're workouts in(ofcourse I knew you would). Great to see you are going to a new trainer and specialist. I think this will be key. My trainer was key for me. He kinda gave me all the info and tools I need to build and workout around my body's limitations to maxmise results...which is what we are all really after.

Everyone's body is a little different so thats one this one on one attention is so vital. You are a strong willed women with tons of willpower and dedication. There is no failure for someone mentally built like you. I have no doubt you will work closely with these new people and together you will find a program thats perfect for you and you're body.

pretty soon once the pain is gone and strength is back you will be back out their running again.

To someone who said running is bad for you. Yeah any kind of stress on you're muscle's or joints is going to take a toll. Thats why you need to see a professional and figure out how to properly run(most people have no clue) and take some classes. I did and it worked wonders. I was on a treadmill while pro's watched me and gave me tips on how to properly kick and refrain and step.

Information is vital. Most people just go out there assuming there isint a wrong way to run and then they hurt themselves badly. Also everything in moderation. You can get a great workout without killing you're body. Most people aren't going to run enough to do real damage like 40-50 miles a week.

I do so I must be vary careful with what I do and how I do it. I make sure I get the best instruction possible. I've run with tri-athletes that are 40-50-60 years old and they are in fantastic shape.

So bottem line there is a wrong way to do anything. Get the proper knowledge before you go out and try and run a tri-athalon or something. You wouldn't take out a new morgage on you're house without doing proper research first would you?
lol
same addage.

Which is why you need to write us a book.....running for "no longer fat" folks. I really does feel good to go faster than you have gone for 20 years or so, on foot. I will just start to run while on my walks......feels really good. I don't know what I am doing and I have a knee that sucks so I don't do it for long.....I need a trainer.....$ and location make it difficult.

Keep up the good fight

You can do it. Really. I was a live asthmatic and still over 400lbs and was doing 15 miles a week. Its just about pushing yourself. sometimes afterwards i was so drained I was a blob the rest of the night. It sucked but, I got through it. After awhile you're body gets used to working out on a regular basis and you start to feel great.
