Default Fitness Challenge

OK, here's an idea that we use at the fitness center for challenges. I think it will be great for a virtual challenge.

1. Pick someone else on the forum you'd like to go visit. That person cannot live in the same state that you do (and by that I mean one of the United States, not the state of confusion... ), but they can live in another country--all you Canadian, European and South American Thinner Times folks, you can jump on this bandwagon, too!

2. Put your address and theirs into maps.google.com or one of the other map functions online, in order to get an accurate mileage.

3. Post who you are going to visit, and how many miles it will take you to get there.

4. Use the fitness miles you pile up for any exercise you do--walking, biking, running, jogging, swimming, elliptical, treadclimber, treadmill, any aerobic exercise where you can judge distance in miles (or kilometers ) to make your way virtually across the country or the world.

Here's mine, and you'll find it tracked below.

LisaM from Illinois to LisaBoston's Canadian haven - 2,339 miles. 2 miles on the elliptical, only 2,337 to go! I think I just tripped and fell in the Mississippi River, it's about 2 miles from the house...

The next post down will be the tracking post, so we can figure out where everyone's heading. On your marks, get set, go visit somebody! And don't forget to see the sights along the way... I'm thinking about making a detour to Mount Rushmore in SoDak...after that, I'm pretty sure it's just lots and LOTS of snow.

Ok I could not decide who to go visit so I thought I would just visit all the people in New York. Not sure where you are all but here is goes. I am in Germany. Closets I could find was Frankfurt (2 hours away).

Visiting New York airport from Frankfurt Airport.
3862 miles
This morning I biked 14.84 miles. So 3847.16. Long way to go.

What a challenge that may take a while.

Default You might be surprised how the miles pile up...

I've put more than a thousand miles on a stationary bike in under a year... and that was when I weighed nearly 300 pounds... let's see, if you average even 10 miles a day, five days a week, that's 50 miles a week, in 20 weeks, you're one thousand miles down the road... If you average 14 miles a day six days a week, you can make a thousand miles in just 12 weeks!

This is designed to get us moving, ladies and gentlemen, and the more we move, the better we'll feel. But make it fun! Don't forget to look at where 100 miles along your path will get you, and 200, and so on. I'm looking forward to seeing the sights... Of course, for you Angie, a couple hundred miles is going to put you smack dab in the Atlantic...but you could stop by the Azores on the way over to New York...

If you guys haven't already gotten Google Earth, it can make this SO much more fun. You can download it at: http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html, and it's free.

Okay, I'm in! I was trying to figure out where to go. I decided to go to San Diego so I can see all of Dr. C's patients (Poway didn't look too far from SD) and I can visit my aunt in La Mesa! So, from Asheville, NC to San Diego, CA is 2,321 mi. I actually live in Leicester, NC, which is right outside of Asheville, but I always google things from Asheville because I usually leave on trips from work. I didn't go to the gym Thursday or Friday. I'm going tonight no matter what!

Distance: 2321
Traveled So far: 0
She is now: Still sittin' on my butt at home!

So, as I travel, how do I figure out where I am? Is there a program that will tell me if I have traveled 100 miles from Asheville along a certain route where I will be, or is it just kind of hit and miss? Thanks for starting this, LisaM! This is going to be fun!
