Included with the cost of my nutritionist is a visit with an exercise physiologist. I need to make that appointment, but he is 3 hours away from me along with my surgeon and nut so I have to coordinate appointments. Along with my gym membership comes a fitness evaluation. I want to wait to have that until I've been going there for a while. On Saturday's at lunchtime, they have a class called Weight Training 101. It's supposed to be a simple class that will give you a good circuit. I may check it out on Saturday and see what it looks like and if I think I can handle it I'll go the next Saturday. I also have my sister who is a lifter and threw shotput, discus, and hammer in high school and college. She is a beast and knows a lot about weight training. She's trying to lose weight right now and is just doing the cardio thing. She already has more lean muscle mass than she wants, but she said that she would show me how to do everything correctly. I didn't do anything today that I didn't know how to do. I only used machines that I was familiar with and did either 10 or 20 reps on each and then did 20 reps on each arm with bicep curls. I need to talk to someone to see what exactly I need to do to try to reduce the bat wings that are already developing under my arms! I haven't yet decided what I'm doing tomorrow. On one hand, it's Valentine's Day and my birthday and I want to take the day off, but on the other hand I don't want to take the day off because I had a blast this morning! Wow, this message has gotten really long! I need to go to bed so I can get up in the morning! Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Have fun at the gym!

Thanks, Carrie!
So, I am trying to make a decision. Is it okay to give my self a day off because it's my birthday? I'm trying to decide. I get off work at 5:00 and hubby will pick me up around 5:30. He has a meeting at 7:00 and we have reservations at a Japanese steakhouse at 8:30. I would have plenty of time to go work out if I want to, but it's my birthday. Decisions, decisions!

of course it is okay to have a day off, take today off and if you want throw in another day, maybe on the weekend, or even after your date, just go for a nice walk the two of you, even window shopping on a downtown street, holding hands, thats still exercise and a little alone time.

My trainer tells me to take one or two days off a week. I don't usually because I am so totally paranoid, but it is good for your body. If you don't take the day off from the gym, just do cardio those days - no resistance training. You have to rest those muscles to get them to re-build as lean muscle.
And you're doing great..

I got back at it tonight! I was worried that if I took a day off, I wouldn't go back. I went with my sister tonight and it is so much better to have a work out partner! She got there before me as she does a lot more than I do, but I ended up doing 15 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the recumbent bike. I'm going to get some instruction before doing any more weight training. I want to be sure I'm working the right muscle groups, etc. After our half hour of cardio, we sat in the sauna. I never used to be able to stay in one of those things for more than 5 or 10 minutes. We were talking and looked out at the clock and it had been 20 minutes! Wow! I'm surprised I didn't melt in there!
The hot tub is still broke but it's supposed to be fixed this weekend. They are waiting on a new boiler for the steam room and it will be fixed, too. I can't wait! I much prefer the steam room to the sauna, and I DEFINITELY love the hot tub! I wish I had longer to spend at the gym. I do my 30 minutes cardio and I'd like to get in the pool with the noodles and weights and do a little water aerobics. Unfortunately, there is only one class that meets MWF at 10:30 am. There is no way I could do a 10:30 am class that lasts an hour. What do they expect those of us who work to do? *sigh* Oh, well! They used to have an evening class but the instructor quit because they were constantly having trouble with the pool. Now they've gotten all that stuff fixed so hopefully they can get another evening instructor in there! I'm off to bed now. I love how the sauna has made my skin feel!

Another tip you can try to increase your excercise is to park a little further at work and when you go to the store so you need to walk more. If you are home and have no transpotation, try a 10 min walk around your neighborhood. You have great energy and enthusiasm. I read you were on the regular bike. How do you do it? I do the recumbant because the regular hurts my backside- lol.
Eventually you can try a walking lunge or a stability ball squat. Do not rush into these if you are not ready since you will be working your legs hard with these excercises.
For the squat-take a stability ball and put it between your body and the wall. Then do a full squat down. You can lean against the ball to make it easier.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am definitely far from being able to do anything with the stability balls! Right now, I'm just trying to gradually increase my cardio. There are two types of the "regular" bikes at my gym. The ones that are in the room where they teach the spin classes I could never ride. Those seats are tiny! The upright bikes they have in the cardio area have bigger seats. They aren't exactly comfortable, but they're okay for 10 minute rides. I just went at lunch today and did 30 minutes of cardio again but this time I increased my heart rate by going a little faster on the treadmill and putting the recumbent bike on level 2 instead of level 1. I did 15 minutes on the treadmill, 10 on the recumbent bike, and 5 on the regular bike. After today, I was wiped out! Now I'm back at work and I have no energy! I need to get more protein in my body before I increase my workouts any further.

Okay, last trip to the gym was Friday and it totally wiped me out! I didn't go Saturday or Sunday. Went tonight and did 45 minutes of cardio! I am so proud of myself! I did 15 minutes on the recumbent bike, 15 minutes on the upright bike, and 15 minutes on the treadmill. Now, my legs are screaming at me. I'm not going to be able to go to the gym Wednesday so I'm trying to figure out how to make it on both Tuesday and Thursday. I really don't like going at lunch because my time is so limited plus I seem to do much better working out at night. I always have been a night person! I think I'm going to go tomorrow night after grocery shopping and dinner. Just leave hubby home alone then I can spend all the time there I want! I may even do the hot tub if it's fixed!
